Disfellowshipping aka Shunning is an incredibly damaging tool of psychological torture weaponized by Jehovah's Witnesses. The act is very controversial to outsiders, which lead to the JW branch in Norway losing their state funding. To reinforce their practice and bolster control, the organization has created a series of pro-shunning videos. Let's take a look.

Crazy how a mom protects her child while in the belly, sing songs to the baby, think of names, and give birth after 9 months. When the baby arrives she’s instantly in a deep love no one can explain. She loves, protects, and take care of the baby until it reaches adulthood only for a religion to rip them apart

I was raised Mormon until adulthood, and had a number of JW associates at school. To see people suffer or torture themselves needlessly in the hope of a better afterlife is really the greatest sadness.

I was disowned after my Jr year in high school because I didn't believe any more. I didn't drink alcohol, didn't smoke, do drugs or have premarital sex. I just didn't believe any more and refused to go to the kingdom hall. JW's also separate you from everyone that isn't a JW so you have zero support the moment you're cast out. My first night out was spent in a park sleeping under a bench. Thank goodness it was springtime and not super cold. That was in 1983. I feel you Owen, the sadness of separation from family remains regardless of how much time passes.

The harm in talking to apostates is that it harms the church's control over its members.

They took the videos down because its bad PR. Shunning is JW most barbaric behavior. My son still doesnt know his only grandparents because his mother was shunned twenty years ago.

My mom died 20 years ago. I can't even imagine replacing her. Its disgusting. You can have a mentor, but not a mom

I could never disown my own flesh and blood that’s very cultish. This beyond predatory behavior.

It made me so sick that my brother called me dead and that my husband could not look, speak, share a meal with, or sleep with me, that I ended up in the hospital with what doctors were testing for as cancer of the stomach but it was all just raw and hurt from the stress of the shunning. By the time I came home (by myself), my husband was having an affair. I never stood a chance. All because I made plans, a”B” Plan, with my little son’s pediatrician that if my son or the baby ever needed any thing requiring lifesaving blood, please take them out of my custody long enough to save their lives then return them to me. That is how frightened I was of the thought of simply watching a child die as many JWs were doing.

I think it's interesting that they never specified what the mother did - I think that is so that people don't get distracted by what it was that she did and just focus on the message that regardless of what the person did, you must behave the same way.

_"Maybe I can help her find her way back to Jehovah."_

Yeah, or maybe your mom can help you to be free of him. Free of the cult, that is. She'll probably spend the rest of her life regretting having ever exposed you to this nonsense in the first place.

This is nauseating as someone whose mom has been disfellowshipped. It was the lowest I've ever seen her. But she said that she could get through it as long as she has her kids. Fortunately I wasn't baptized at the time so I could get away with talking to her but I was discouraged by my JW family for associating with her which was so gross of them as I was only sixteen and needed my mom still. Doesn't surprise me how these videos were wiped off the site. They're just vile.

I was disfellowshipped twice by 19. Around 5 is the first time I remember my mother telling me she loves Jehovah more then me and the benefits she would receive from the congregation and Jehovah should she be forced to disown me.

We have been shunned by our daughter for 25 years now. We have six grandchildren that we have never seen. It's sickening.

I think the reason they removed it was because of Norway removing their religion status and Why they removed it. I think someone should push legislation here that any religion that uses psychological tactics against its members to control membership.

I came within a hair’s breadth of being indoctrinated into the JW movement nearly forty years ago. Dodged a bullet there, because I wasn’t willing to either marry (and coerce him into JWs) or reject and repent of my partner. I’m still with that partner to this day, and still not married, and still happy.

Ex JW here, they say that if you do not contact them they will eventually go back to the religion. They also instill fear that they will corrupt them to become "apostate'

I knew a girl who was shunned by her family for the sin of falling in love outside of the faith. Such an unbelievably cruel method of control and manipulation.

My mother thought that cutting off contact with family members was wrong. I have a cousin named Sharron and she like s girls more than boys and when Uncle Harold found out he never spoke to his daughter again for the rest of his life. My mother thought that was messed up and so do I.

Obviously, the reason they don't want members talking to shunned people is because they higher ups are afraid the dis-felloshiped folks will talk some sense into those still in the cult.
