1976-06-15 - Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, New York, USA.
"Big" George Foreman (41-1-0, KO's 38) vs. "Smoking" Joe Frazier (32-3-0, KO's 27) - 2nd match.
- NABF Heavyweight Championship -

# George Foreman's 1st NABF title defence and world ranked: 1#
# Joe Frazier was world ranked: 3# by The Ring.
# The bout was billed as "The Gladiators".
# George Foreman was the favourite to win. But one Las Vegas bookmaker had Frazier as a 7-5 favorite.
# Each former world champion was guaranteed $1 million.
# Foreman was 27 years old - Frazier was 32 years old = 5 years of age difference.
# The fight was shown on closed circuit television.
# Several hours before the fight, Frazier shaved his head on pure impulse to make himself look more intimidating in the ring.

# BACKGROUND:
After George Foreman's brutal slugging war victory against rival Ron Lyle with a 5th round KO that was later awarded by The Ring as "The Fight of the Year", a fight where Foreman also won the NABF heavyweight title, Foreman chose to face Joe Frazier in a rematch.
Frazier was then the world's 3# heavyweight per The Ring. Because of the one-sided Foreman victory in their first fight back in 1973, and the fact that Frazier had taken a tremendous amount of punishment from Ali in Manila a year earlier, few expected him to win. Frazier at this point was 32–3, having lost only to Foreman and Ali twice, and Foreman was 41–1, with his sole defeat at the hands of Ali.

# AFTERMATH:
George Foreman defeated once again era rival Joe Frazier with another knock-out victory ad Foreman both defended his NABF heavyweight title and came closer to his desire of a rematch with Mohammad Ali for his lost crown.

Shortly after the fight, Joe Frazier announced his retirement.

Absolutely amazing. The quality, the output of punches the chins of them both. It really is true when they say they don’t make them like this anymore.

Joe starts moving laterally while backing up and suddenly Foreman struggles to even touch him. Joe walks a 180 around Foreman and out frustration Foreman grabs ahold of him. Then Joe retorts back to standing in front of Foreman and also moving backwards in a straight line, and suddenly Foreman has no issues hitting him again.
IMO, one of Joe´s biggest mistakes that night was him constantly moving backwards in a straight line. Foreman for his size, was quite explosive and closed that cap very quick when Joe´s back touched the ropes.
The 3rd round, Joe came out moving laterally and he was boxing really well. Until Foreman applied pressure and Joe once again moved backwards in a straight line. Had Joe shown more methodical footwork, it would have been an even better fight.

Smoke went in there with his vision so impaired in his left eye he wore a contact lens according to his biography. The man was fearless but Big George just had his number.

Frazier looking like he took a page out of Ali's book. Smarter strategy this time by Joe but he's not a natural defensive fighter like Ali, doesn't have the particular skills needed to deal with George effectively

I believe that's Joe's 15-year-old son Marvis in the ring with him before the fight, who'd be a top amateur but an unsuccessful pro fighter, best remembered for his two one-round blowout losses to Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson.

Frazier is a warrior. Almost killed in the first fight; Yeah I’ll have another crack. Foreman doesn’t lose to shorter fighters.

Although not the same sort of beatdown as in their first fight, I think George was equally as impressive here. George was fighting completely relaxed here and picking his punches well just as he would later do during his comeback. Gil Clancy worked well with him. I think Joe would have been disappointed if he expected George to tire later on as George fighting like this can just keep going as we later found out. Would have been interesting to see this George in there with Ali, he probably would still lose but more likely by decision, although Ali after Manilla might have had some problems against Foreman by that point.
