So glad I found this channel 4-5 years ago. Today there are so many junk science channels and videos on YouTube I’m not sure I would’ve picked this jewel out of the weeds.

Keep up the good work John! Always a treat when I get the notification!

The question as to why Mars, or Venus weren't colonized is probably answered by the prior statement that there are billions of stars and 90% have habitable zones. There are hundreds of millions of choices to pick to colonize. Why pick Mars if there are 10s of millions of choices with better starting points.

Regardless of how many planets might develop life,
technological civilisations may be extremely rare among them.

This was posted three minutes ago, and already has 104 views. Nicely done! One of the best channels on YT.

I wonder how the world would react if an alien civilization started to colonize Mars while just ignoring us.

John, your videos are incredible! I’m a senior in high school and I plan to be an Astrophysicist. Your videos have provided me with a lot of inspiration and I enjoy listening to them when I drive to and from school. Thank you so much for what you do!

My view is that interstellar travel is actually much more difficult than the "Fermi Paradox" gives it credit for. Interstellar space is mostly empty, but not completely empty. Even if you are moving at only a small fraction of the speed of light, running into even a small micrometeorite would likely be devastating. Fuel is another problem. The Fermi Paradox assumes that for a sufficiently advanced species, interstellar travel becomes possible, but I'm not convinced that we really know that. We just presume it to be true.

Why would you not colonize a random rock in the Atlantic ocean? Because there are better options. A decent o'neil cylinder for example.

I believe the question Fermi asked has pretty much been answered over and over again. It’s well past time we, as a species, concentrated on saving ourselves from ourselves rather than some vague extra-terrestrial threat. I expect we’ll run out of natural resources, or have devastated our ability to progress farther than our current tribal behaviours, well before it becomes economically viable to move our destructive mining operations to the asteroid belt.
To grossly paraphrase Einstein - it’s hard to build a working spaceship out of sticks.
