What Is Merino Wool? Is It REALLY Better Than Regular Wool?

Merino wool comes from the Merino sheep and has several qualities that make it much better for some hunting gear than regular wool. Merino wool has finer fibers which provide three distinct advantages:

1) It is less itchy than regular wool and can be comfortably worn as a next to skin base layer.
2) It is less bulky than normal wool and just as warm, enabling you to have more insulation while taking up less space.
3) It wicks and evaporates moisture faster than regular wool, helping you stay dry and better regulate temperature.

Merino wool is outstanding for late season, cold weather hunts. Whether you are very active or sitting still it is an ideal layer that helps regulate body temperature to keep you warm. It is also a great material for early season hunts as well because it is so breathable.

I've used merino wool socks for about 3 years regardless of season and while I knew it was superior gear I didn't know why.
Thanks for explaining the fiber size thing, makes total sense. I strongly urge everyone to toss all those old socks and replace them with 4 or 5 pair of merino socks.

I use SmartWool for my socks and they are terrific! Whether the temp is 110 or -40, my feet are protected and comfortable. No more seasonal socks in my kit and I can wear boots year round [note: my feet will sweat in any temp above 0 and lower temps if I'm very active].

My Socks are just regular Wool. I'm so Itchy. What should I do about that? I should Sue. Carhartt has deep pockets. But not in My Socks.
