It can only washed in the washing machine if it is superwash treated. Otherwise it will felt and shrink. You are right, wool does not stink after wear, and wool is antibacterial, so you can wear it quite a few tim3s before you need to wash it. It is great for next to skin wear, but is not the strongest of all wools, so for outer wear or socks, I would choose a different breed of sheep. One that gives wool that does not pill as easily, is stronger, and naturally does not felt as easy, so you don't have to chemically treat it to prevent shrinkage. Also, merino sheep do not grow easily in every country, think how you can use wool from local farmers more, before importing wool products from across the world. Still, i use merino every day. And wool from other breeds of sheep too.
