Lyrics:

Cremate me
Deliver me to safety
So that when it’s spent maybe
It will be my own

Scatter ashes
Leave no marker where you plant it
So the hordes will be disbanded as they search
On a treasure map for my headstone

Leave me to the beasts and bears
I’d rather that the feast was theirs
They can’t reserve neighbouring plots
Or request to be buried on top
Leave me for a day or two
To make sure that I turn blue
For the first time since I drew breath,
I’m undesirable again

I’ll tattoo it
Just so they think it’s ruined
and if they think it’s ruined
It’s easier to save
But please hurry
If you really love me
you’ll dispose of me
Unceremoniously in the waves

Leave me to the trees and air
I’d rather that the feast was theirs
They can’t reserve neighbouring plots
Or buy cuttings of my priceless locks
Leave me for two days or three
’Til my fingertips turn green
For the first time since I drew breath
I’m undesirable again

And they will come
In such dismay
That they never did discover where I lay
And I will burn
My flesh and form
Screaming the words
“it will never be yours”
I’ll take the flame over desecration
Promise you’ll make on these arrangements
Don’t you dare think it’s overkill
I wouldn’t wish the watching on anybody
So if for that reason only
Swear to me you will

Leave me to the beasts and bears
I’d rather that the feast was theirs
They can’t reserve neighbouring plots
Or request to be buried on top
Leave me for a day or two
To make sure that I turn blue
For the first time since I drew breath,
I’m undesirable again

After Anne Boleyn was decapitated, her ladies in waiting refused to let the guards take her headless body. "The head and body were taken up by the ladies, whom you would have thought bereft of their souls, so languid and weak were they with anguish, but, fearing that their mistress might be handled unworthily by inhuman men, they forced themselves to do this duty."

I think my favorite thing about this song is that it's not about death or what happens to your body after you die--- it's about the feeling of what people would do to you. The terror. The panic. The fear. About how even when you're dead, you need to be rotted to truly free of the eyes that want to ruin you.

as an indian woman, the timing of this song being released now just hits even harder after the Kolkata doctor case. women really aren't safe anywhere, even in death.

"I’ll take the flame over desecration"

Hits hard even more when you know the story of King Tamar of Georgia.
She was an incredible ruler, a first women with the title of a King, and even in death, her legacy was fiercely protected. There is a story when a Mongol khan threatened her that he would get her doesn't matter dead or alive.
but After her death in 1213, her loyal followers went to great lengths to keep her safe. The ones that knew where she was buried choose to die to keep it as a secret. Till this day no one knows where her remains are kept.
Sad to see that even with this powerful title no woman were ever safe and were treated with disrespect.

I'm from India. We had a horrible crime take place. And ever since, the reporting of such violence has increased. In the fortnight between now and then, it has been cases after cases. This song, right now, just makes me break down. I want to cry. I want to scream. When do women get to live without fear????

As a funeral director my coworkers and i have talks about that despicable man above Marilyn's crypt. We all agree, whoever was the director who buried him should be ashamed of themself. Granted at my firm, we have more women then men, so we especially dont let horrendous things like this fly. People are still people in death and deserve respect and dignity.

I have been obsessed with this since the first snippet was released. At that time, the song's final line was "For the first time since I was ten, I'm undesirable again". The fact that it changed to "For the first time since I drew breathe" makes this song painful in the most perfect way. Full circle of how women are not safe in death nor in birth. I love this so much.

"leave me to the beasts and bears"
I CHOOSE THE BEAR we all say in unison

"They cant reserve neighbouring plots, or request to be put on top"
To this day, I still remember that disgusting excuse of a man who was buried on top of Marilyn Monroe. The fact he had that as a request is already disgusting, but the fact that it was not only acknowledged but also concreted? Thats fucking terrifying

The fact that she refers to her own body as "it" to show the disconnect between her and her flesh in the way she is perceived...and how she feels like her body is not her own when it is watched and coveted.

The line “I’ll tattoo it just so they think it’s ruined” to me speaks about how some people believe that tattoos “ruin” women- which is so stupid like bestie we’re not getting tattooed for you- and it also speaks to the desperation to not be harassed/be seen as desirable

The way you smile at the line 'be undesirable again' really drives home how dangerous it can be to *be* desired...Thank you for this song, as well as your others.

Her ability to make songs that feel ancient and modern at the same time is so amazing. She kills it every single time

As someone who was sexually abused as a child, the line "For the first time since I drew breath, I'm undesirable again" is the most hauting and tragically beautiful reflection of how I've felt ever since. I couldn't have found a better way to describe the feeling if I'd tried. Thank you, Paris Paloma, for expressing our pain, rage and sadness when we can't find the words.

"Or buy cuttings of my priceless locks" I know a neighbouring theme in this song is honouring Marilyn Monroe through highlighting how disgustingly she was treated after her death, and specially the way women are treated after death. I feel like that attitude is normalised with how acceptable it is to buy a complete stranger's possessions/parts of them, just because they have notoriety, it's weird and refuse to pretend it isn't.
