Once again Stratfor and George are spot on. I have been a reader of their material for years and they always have a way of linking countries and their actions/inaction in a cohesive, concise, and understandable manner.

So Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon are, or at least were contrived states - fact.  Hmm, sorry Mr Friedman, but though Syria was more in the nature of a region during the Ottoman Empire, it has been a country (once an extensive empire) for thousands of years and until French partition, included Lebanon still until 1918-ish ... but let's not haggle too much.

Strange how Friedman did not mention Palestine, which too was a country mandated by the British c. 1918.  Strange how Friedman didn't mention how the Balfour Declaration eventually allowed for the creation of another really very artificial state called Israel in part of Palestine in 1948.  Very strange that no mention was made of how this European outpost quite bizarrely expanded.  I wonder (not) why Friedman did not mention how fragile that all is ... btw he's wrong about Russia, so what else does he have wrong?  A lot, I know for a fact.

I don't know why he's so enamored of space based solar power. Talk about vulnerability. The trend should be towards decentralized locally produced electrical energy. The national grid is just way too vulnerable. And spaced based solar would make it even more so.
