Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Queen Elizabeth's Buzzer Bell!

Adam has recently been binging and enjoying Netflix's The Crown, and builds a prop he imagines would fit in the show's portrayal of Buckingham Palace. In the show, Queen Elizabeth makes use of a buzzer to ring in guests and heads of state for meetings, so today's prop build is Adam's take on what that instrument would look like if he made it for the palace using technology from 100 years ago!

Hey Adam I didn't work at the palace but I worked at The Goring a old hotel that is next to the palace and as a chef on a number of occasions served the Queen and the rest of the family I have seen a few items of royal provenance over the years and think the Royal Family would definitely approve of your mobile bell only thing I will say is most old houses and castles in the UK are wired with bells in all the rooms for butler's and maids to respond too The private dining room that the royal family used to eat in when they dined in the hotel even had a concealed and button under the table to announce when the family was ready for clearing and the next course just thought yo may be interested. As always a pleasure watching you I do have more stories if you are interested spent about 2 years working in London and have enough stories for a lifetime.

Can´t wait for the update video: "Welcome to my cave, soooo.... Queen Elizabeth II called and wanted to borrow my bell, so now I need to make a box for it".

You had me at "the Queen's handyman". That's a movie idea right there!

It's the most Adam thing ever that this one-day build took over four months to complete.

I do have some information on the bells in Windsor Castle. They are all hardwired in, some are directly attached to a wall or floor, while others are on a lead and run to a plug. Just as people have coaxial or ethernet, there are dedicated bell plugs. They have two pins and look similar to lamp plugs. They run off to cupboards on various floors and into red flag boxes, not the jingling bells you see in dramas. They were installed by a company called T Clark who also did St James Castle.

I assume that Buckingham Palace is wired similarly, Prince Philip was the architect for a grand plan of modernisation to the systems of the royal residences including a PA system. Much of the palace was wired in the late 1940s and in 2018, the family moved out to Balmoral and a massive rewiring effort went ahead. They removed some 2km of vulcanised Indian rubber cabling, and replaced the heating and plumbing at the same time. I imagine they'll have installed something a little more modern now, likely linked into the modern replaced PA system which runs over ethernet.

At Balmoral, they apparently use a modern wireless solution now with a button very similar to that of a doorbell. It is indicative of the smaller and more homely of the royal residences where less import is placed on tradition such as electric fireplaces and televisions.

As for The Crown, I believe the bells did not attach to anything. It was just some wire that ran under a table and stopped.

I love this creation of yours, it would make for an excellent idea if the Queen was traveling at the time. The ship Britannia was also fitted with servant's bells, but I'm sure there were a variety of situations where the Queen could have had use of such a device.

I can't get the image out of my head of the queen watching this and being like "I say, that's much better than mine, I wish to have it!" Also, I'm pretty sure The Duke would've got a kick out of this. "Oh bloody hell, there she goes on that damn bell again..."

The Queen was also an active member of the British military during WW2, and served as both a driver and truck mechanic. (Probably the only Queen ever, capable of field stripping and reassembling a vehicle! ;)

Not sure about the history of the Queen's bell, but I have seen other devices like this in the past, and they existed for one very specific reason. If you had that footman standing outside the room waiting for a hand bell to be rung, he would need to hear everything that went on inside the room. By using a remote bell, rung electrically, the room can be soundproof. Similar to the reason that some of the secure areas I have worked in did not have the same fire alarm system that existed in the rest of the building. The main system used speakers. Those speakers could be turned into microphones. So they were not permitted in the secure area. In the secure area, there are only strobe lights and mechanical bell ringers.

I love the joy. The sheer passion he has for his ideas and execution of his projects. Not enough youtube makers are genuinely impressed with their own work. It's a truly refreshing energy to see.

Love it. I use a repurposed fire bell and a factory hooter as my doorbells.

It amuses me to no end that I use the very same small pocket utility knife as Adam Savage. I cheer out loud every time he uses it. It makes me feel like I know what I’m doing every time I use it. Thank you Adam.

I just see the queen watching this then telling her people "retractable cord... why did you not think of that?"
