As an Ex Malaysian I fully agree with you. Think of the most important thing before moving there i.e yours and family SAFETY.

It’s not just JB, the whole of Malaysia, except the highlands, is much hotter than Singapore. That’s because their towns and cities have lesser trees and not landscaped. They have less towering buildings as the land is large and widely spaced out. Walking on the streets of Malaysia can really darken your skin. That’s why the Malaysians are more tanned than Singaporeans. The islands like Penang, Tioman, Langkawi are much more scorching hot and I got sun burnt even though I use sunscreens. 😅

In big countries, getting from one place to another is more inconvenient and time consuming if they don’t have MRT. Owning a car is the most efficient way to get around. That’s why most Malaysians drive and you don’t see many people walking on the streets outside the city areas except the silly foreigners! 😅Some Malaysian households have 2-3 cars and motorcycles parked at their porches, as the family prefer to drive around since their cars are way cheaper.

I feel it’s best to retire in your own country if you have lived most of your life in Singapore as nothing beats the familiarity and sense of belonging. Think about the flush of emotions that encompass you on arrival at Changi Airport whenever you return home from your overseas trips. In your heart, you probably chant out “It’s great to be home”. That’s exactly what I mean. This sense of belonging is so comforting and re-assuring. At least, in my own country during my old age, I know I’m going to be well taken care of and enjoy the rights and privileges of my citizenship here. In another country, you’re just a guest, worse, face discrimination even if you may not be aware of! 😅

I went to Jb a few times, I don’t agree the food is better than Singapore, just cheaper. The best food in Malaysia is in KL or Penang, definitely not JB. Yes food is tastier in Malaysia but note Malaysian food tends to be saltier and more unhealthy, difficult to find healthier options like in Singapore.

I dont’t know about JB but when I was staying in KL, national parks there are not safe to walk at, many motorcycle gangs like to gather there. I felt very unsafe even in broad daylight. When I came back to Singapore, the feeling of walking free and safe even at night at parks is something I would never give up

I ever lived in Perak, Kelantan, Sabah, England, Singapore. Living in Kelantan, England and Singapore are wonderful experience for me but moving to Johor is my greatest regret . I experienced robbery, theft, scams, car loss, defraud by estate after after living Johor Bahru 4 years.

From rat race to race to causeway race... Life should be peaceful and calm when we reach retirement. What Singaporeans should do to prepare for retirement while accumulating wealth is to reduce excessive, unnecessary desires and expenditures... Plus unnecessary social activities.

The grass is always greener outside. So many Singaporean complain the place is overcrowded. So people leaving Singapore to go over will be a blessing for the rest of us.

Usually, people in Malaysia own cars and don't walk around much. Some families have a household income of less than SGD 2, 500 per month but still own two Toyota cars, a beautiful landed double-storey house, and have three schooling children, as the cost of living in Malaysia is cheap and salaries are not high.

I prefer to retire in SG. Make 1 to 2 day trips per month to JB for a short get away. I don’t think I like to up keep and maintain 2 houses during my retirement. Physically too demanding at old age. I prefer to do more trips to other parts of the world for better experiences than confined just across the causeway.

I know of people who migrated to another country and discovered later on that they were isolated with no real friends in a foreign culture.

While the food in JB is priced low and affordable, I've noticed a decline in quality due to the use of less-fresh ingredients.

Anyone who wants to live in Malaysia or any parts of it must at least know how to drive. You must own a car. It doesn't work like in SG where anyone can just hop onto a bus or MRT to get to the destinations.

As for greenery in JB, it depends where you live. I aam surrounded by trees and green. And I am 4 mins from the checkpoint.

Life is not that long. When u retired just choose a place that is safe, orderly and wholesome to settle in. SG has all the above criteria. When u r old food safety is another concern

Thank you for your very good upfront alert especially on safety & security. Also not to forget the yearly heavy flooding and the notorious traffic & drivers' attitude there... big, heavy vehicles will not give way to smaller vehicles.

If you already own a 300 sq m dwelling mortgage free and have more than SGD 5 million cash, it makes no sense to leave Singapore for JB.

Yes! Agree, weather is very hot & humid…don’t feel like walking outdoors.

Two other reasons not to retire in JB ... frequent floods and inconvenient public transportation

Dear Mr Loo. I'm sure many people are aware of your wealth. Considering your high profile, I don't think it's advisable for you to frequent Johor Bahru (JB) due to safety concerns.

Mr Loo, you mentioned you have setup a company in Malaysia. Will you have an episode to talk about what is required to set one up and the cost of maintaining it to fulfil the tax and compliance requirements? Do you need a local to partner with you etc? Thank you!
