When I say “I’m poor” what I mean is I spend 40+ hours of my life every week at a job I dislike just to survive long enough to make it to the next week. People don’t want jets and lambos man…they just want freedom of choice

Americans don't realize that people in other countries dream of Walmart and Costco living standards.

Once worked for an Ivy League university and after a few years quit and went elsewhere. When I quit the employees asked me why I would leave and I disclosed I was not beiong paid a reasonable wage. They then questioned me by asking, "well what about the status." My answer was I was unable to eat status and needed to move on.

Having loads in the bank whilst driving a crap car and eating in Costco is the best feeling.

Money doesn’t matter when you have money. Just like food doesn’t matter when you’re full.

I agree that most Americans are spoiled and don't know how to live within their means. But I do think poverty does exist. If a person is working a full time job, and cannot afford to own a place to live, then they are poor. There are many Americans who will never be able to afford to buy a home. They are living pay check to pay check. And if they have children, it is a difficult situation to be in. In a just society, anyone who is working a full time job should at least be able to afford a small apartment. But rent prices have gone up all over the country. And inflation has caused the price of food and gas to go up almost 30% within the past few years. To be honest, I don't think that most young people can even afford to buy a new car. In just a few decades we have gone from a society where a family could afford a home on a single income, to where it now requires a two income household to afford an apartment.

yeah this goes back to thinking women would sleep with a dude because he's rich. they don't care about your money, they care about your status

Money can buy you access to better healthcare. As a multi-millionaire, you can pay for an MRI out of pocket and have a specialist review it in two weeks. Without money or private insurance, you'd have to wait til your symptoms worsen enough to justify a referral, and then wait another 2-6 months to be seen. And if said specialist doesn't take you seriously, too bad. Forget about a second opinion. You'd be stuck with a chronic condition for the rest of your life.

Healthcare is what money is for in the US.

I think being poor is more about access to real estate ownership than access to "money". The status economy idea is relevant too.

its always been like that, humans have a horrible obsession with showing off. Iam a six figure independent loner working a low status job. Iam invisible to the eyes of most people.

I worked a soup kitchen in San Jose CA in the early 1980s the line was around the block with shell shocked Vietnam veterans who could not get help from the government. Some were on drugs to deal with the physical and psychological pain. All of them were homeless not by choice

Here in Australia media keeps harping how people struggle because of inflation and high cost of livings. Same media on same day reported Taylor Swifts tour sold out in minutes!!

You are partly right. Eating food from the trash will keep you from starving and people in the USA are doing that and it is definitely poor; not being able to afford basic housing so you live on the street or in a shelter is definitely poor and dangerous. There are definitely poor people in the USA.

That feeling when you can look poor but know that you can easily buy a house and a lambo with ease must be liberating.

One thing you forgot TechLead Show, a lot of people want financial freedom so that they don’t have to work under a boss that they may not agree with. You can have a fulfilling job, but if you have a boss or a company that you don’t see eye to eye with it’s very difficult to work for them. You may have limited options unless you want to keep moving around the country to get a new boss. But if one has financial freedom, they can do what they want to do without worrying about working for a bad boss or a bad company.

The mental gymnastics are strong with this one. It’s always the millionaires telling you how unimportant money is.

I don't want to be rich, nor do I want to be poor. All I want is to live. Not just to survive, but to live.
