SteelSeries joins the Rapid Trigger squad. But how good is it? Can the Apex Pro Mini beat the Wooting 60HE?

I worked as a staff writer for an enthusiast PC hardware magazine in the 2000's. We had sophisticated benchmarks for easily quantifiable things such as RAM, hard disk, CPU performance etc, but when it came to peripherals, when we simply felt like two pieces of hardware were offering roughly the same performance, we were confident enough to say "no real world difference" or something similar, and give mice or keyboards etc the same performance score. We asked ourselves if it was possible to be more scientific, we usually concluded yes, but we didn't have enough time or expertise to build a fair testing rig, and that was for a large professional team working at a publishing house. This video especially makes me feel like back then we were letting our readers down a little and stifling the efforts of independent engineers. The fact you built a rig with a slow motion camera to test your initial hypothesis, is unbelievably good, in a world where it feels like YouTube content is in a race to the bottom in terms of shortcuts and clickbait, you are raising the game. Well done. I'm sure your audience, and the hardware developers who put incredible efforts into their design, are all incredibly thankful for your efforts.

The main thing i like about wooting is the software. Everything saving to the keyboard itself, being able to use it in a browser if you dont want to download it. Its so refreshing. All the big companies forcing you to have their bloatware open 24/7 for features is really getting to me.

1:44 "FN + T" is also a new default meta binding on the Apex Pro that toggles rapid trigger so as long as your keyboard firmware is up to date, you don't need to use the software to enable it

I would like to note that since this video has been released there was an update to the SteelSeries Apex PRO firmware which allows for customization of Rapid Trigger sensitivity.

Couple updates as someone who has the SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL now:

1. The software actually does allow you to change the sensitivity of Rapid Trigger now
2. The issue of keys being spammed happened to me as well, had to decrease the sensitivity of Rapid Trigger to fix it

I really hope Wooting makes a 75%. Was close to buying the 60, but I just can’t do without arrow or F keys.

The SteelSeries software has likely been written in Electron (the same technology that vscode and discord use). Electron apps are basically a website (CSS/HTML/JS) bundled with a chromium browser (with other features of course) hence why it takes so much ram, an entire browser has to run to render the thing.

I know everyone praises the production quality of your videos. But you must understand how much we truly appreciate the effort you put into each one, and how informative and entertaining each are.

Ever since they released rapid trigger on my apex pro I’ve actually seen a significant improvement to my movement. Glad to have a feature on my existing keyboard without spending more money on a wooting ❤

Truly the best tech channel in the game. Just straight to the point, no cringe ad breaks, very clear results and without bias. Keep em coming!

Just got my Wooting Two HE (the full size one) and that thing slaps.

The fact you can just load your settings in on-board memory and straight up plug it into any computer for the first time without any extra software installed whatsoever while retaining all the features (even the RGB profiles and animations) working out of the box is insane.

Analogue movement is also neat.

There's another Rapid Trigger keyboard that I don't think is particularly well known because its a newer company, its called the Drunkdeer A75, it uses magnetic switches just like the wooting and features a rapid trigger feature, but lacks the analog inputs of the wooting. Some older reviews of this keyboard are outdated because of how much the software for this keyboard has been developed; Old reviews claim that the keyboard does not have a true rapid trigger, which was true at the time, but the feature was since patched in. I would love to see you test this keyboard because there's not a lot of info out there on it, but I believe it to be an excellent option for anyone wanting a rapid trigger at a much lower price point than the wooting. Its also a 75% which is a preferred format for some people.

Love how straight to the point your videos are now. Even got rid of the intro to make it instantaneous

Hey Opt, my Apex Pro Mini also broke like that similar to yours but from changing the actuation to the fastest lmao. Once it broke I could not fix it... Ended up returning it and got the Wooting. From the research I did, this type of issue isn't as uncommon as you'd think.

Good to see you mention the software that's part of the product. Couldn't mention how many pc hardware parts I've had that have been good but are severly let down by the lack of proper software that is actually worth a damn. After going through a handful of different keyboards I settled on the duckyone2mini specificly because it doesn't have any software to rely on because it's all built in.

We just need a Wooting TKL version and it will be perfect as well for other tasks like programming, and having dedicated F keys is nice too.

I had the same issue with my Apex Pro Mini. I managed to fix it by changing the actuation point to above 1.8mm, after that the issue with spamming keys seemed to disappear (mind you that this was on the older firmware before rapid trigger). I still returned the keyboard though and now waiting on my Wooting to arrive hopefully this week.

Lucky to have my Wooting right now, it is so hard to get especially in my country. I would like to see a review on Drunkdeer A75 as it has the same features as the Wooting but way more accessible.

I have my Wooting Two HE since end of 2021 and couldn´t be happier with it´s functions like rapid trigger or adjustable activation height
