These quotes beg the question if the Roman Papacy today is the same as the Roman Papacy before the 1000s. Does the church always belong to the Roman Papacy or did the Roman Papacy leave the church in 1054? If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be great.

According to the Encyclopedia of Religion, even modern Catholic scholars concede that “there is no direct Biblical proof that Jesus established the papacy as a permanent office within the church.”

The New Catholic Encyclopedia admits “that one does not find in the New Testament any words of Christ indicating how the apostolic mandate was to be handed on.” It also confesses that “papal primacy was not clearly understood or explicitly professed in the Western [Latin] Church until the fifth century C.E.”
