How to write the formula for Nitric acid (HNO3)

In this video we'll write the correct formula for Nitric acid.

To write the formula for Nitric acid we’ll use the Periodic Table, a Common Ion Table, and follow some simple rules.

Because Nitric acid has a polyatomic ion (the group of non-metals after the metal) we’ll need to use a table of names for common polyatomic ions, in addition to the Periodic Table.

If the name for the acid is:

Hydro + stem + ic
1. Write H.
2. Use the stem to find element name on the
periodic table.
3. Balance the charges.

Stem + ic
1. Write the ion: stem + ate
2. Look up ion on Common Ion Table.
3. Write H and then the ion formula.
4. Balance the charges.

Stem + ous
1. Write the ion: stem + ite
2. Look up ion on Common Ion Table.
3. Write H and then the ion formula.
4. Balance the charges.
