Sorcery & Magic Throughout Game of Thrones History

In A Song of Ice and Fire, there are so many types of sorcery and magic that exist in Westeros, Essos, and beyond. Game of Thrones left out some of the most interesting magical lore from ASOIAF, such as Valyrian glass candles and Euron Greyjoy's shade-of-the-evening trips. In this video, I cover eight different categories of magic in ASOIAF / GoT, as well as some sorcerers who wield magic, like Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, Bloodraven, and more.

I'm not convinced that the birth of the dragons so much brought magic back to the world, it always struck me as more likely that the return of magic allowed the long dormant egg's to hatch, and that it's slow ebbing is why the older generation of dragons grew stunted.

I loved the suspense early in the series, where magic was hinted at, but it hadn't yet been confirmed. Then the shadow baby killed Renley in what was a "holy shit" moment.

A note about the dragon dreams. It’s implied that they’re either exclusive to the Targaryens, or that the Targaryens have an unusual concentration of dreamers. Hence why they were the only dragon lords to escape Valyria before the doom

Anyone else think the 3 eyed raven is trying to get Bran to him so he can body snatch him? If he warged into a normal human he would lose his worg powers but with brans body he would have a second life worth living

It's so cool to see the magic we see classified! I kind of thought that all strong magic is partly or wholly blood magic. So, greenseing and green dreams (or fever dreams for characters that lay to sleep on wierwoods stumps) happen due to blood sacrifices to weirwood/old gods, dragon dreams bc the Dragon lords connected their blood with dragons through blood magic, the skin changing happens due to some blood bonding between the children of the forest and starks/first men, melisandre sees future in the flames through burning king's blood, etc.

For some reason "Ghost is more alive than I am", the accidental skinchanging, and a few other things really makes me feel like in the book Jon will have gone into Ghost before being killed and that can be his ticket back into his own body after some magic or something else aids em.

Always love to find a new ASOIAF creator! Also love the use of Souls footage to convey certain things. I am so deep into ASOIAF & Soulsborne-Ring(?) lore, they have so many interesting similarities. When I heard GRRM was on the team for ER I was overjoyed!

You forgot shadowbinding? Also, Melisandre could've been another example of elemental control: She ignited Varamyr when he was warged in his bird.

Great job! This is the most concise collection of theories I've seen. Good job not getting bogged down in the details. Usually it's take 3, separate, 2+ hour videos to go over just one of these topics.

I've got a theory about the magic returning.
Is magic coming back to the world because of the dragons, or was dany able to hatch dragons because the others started coming back first? The others and the long night started happening before Dany's dragons hatched and maybe magic is returning to combat the others.

Solid tackling of the lore in GoT for magic! I was wondering what the stories were behind each of them and didn't read the books myself yet, so the way you put this together was very pleasant to digest and listen on!

This was very interesting and I always appreciate when things said are backed up with text from the source. Well done and many thanks to you!

6:26 Religions in asoiaf are interesting because of the way various beliefs created by George RR Martin reflect real world beliefs throughout our history. George uses religion within his books to subtly display the effect different sources of magic have had on shaping people and their beliefs throughout the history of his fantasy world. Truly unmatched worldbuilding

I think Aerys was also Dragon Dreamer and he saw others invade Kings Landing thats why he commanded to place wildfire all over the city
so when he said famous worlds "Burn them all"
he meant the others not people, Aeris wanted be ready to blow up whole city to get rid of others if they enter city .

Lol. I was thinking "fewer" before the clip. Nicely done. Count-nouns scre people up a lot once you start to notice it.

Larys Strong is also a rumored Greenseer. Alys Rivers is also said to have been able to see visions in storm clouds, water, and flames
