My friends and I actually still use Skype as our main way of communicating because in middle school or smth two of us had phone plans that charged per text so we needed an app or website to talk so as not to pay, and it turned out Skype was the only one not blocked at our school, and I geuss we've just stuck with it out of tradition, although only the text function, we're all too shy n awkward to video chat, though we used to call on it without video and play Minecraft or multiplayer games together, using it as a knock off discord lol

I have an uncle/aunt and many cousins that have lived in the Karpathian Mountains in Ukraine since the 90s. Back in the mid 2000s Skype was the only way my family had any communication with them face to face. Everything else was Facebook. Good times!

In German we even used the equivalent of “to skype” to say “to video chat” after Skype already was dead! Lol
