Before the sun never set on the British Empire; before Genghis Khan swept the steppe; before Rome extended its influence to encircle the Mediterranean Sea; there was ancient Assyria. Considered by historians to be the first true empire, Assyria’s innovations laid the groundwork for every superpower that has followed. Marian H Feldman details the rise and fall of the Assyrian Empire.

Lesson by Marian H Feldman, animation by Naghmeh Farzaneh.

I’m curious to know how there are so many people who identify as Assyrian today...that’s incredible that they remain linked to such an ancient civilization. Greetings to all Assyrians from Egypt.

It's beyond fascinating to think how much history there really is in a relatively "small" time frame if you consider how old the Earth and life itself is...

This hits harder when you are from Iraq and see how your country was once great and beautiful and not like what it is now

As an Assyrian (my mother), I'm glad to see a brief history mention their achievements besides their ruthlessness in war.

As an Iraqi (Mesopotamian) I’m proud to see much history coming from the cradle of civilization. Although I’m not Assyrian, I’m still proud and glad to share the history and culture with fellow descendants.🇮🇶

I am proud to be Assyrian. It is sad people don’t learn about this great empire in school. It literally connects our age to their age

One day I went to the Iraqi Museum in Baghdad and saw the ruins of Babylon, Ur, Sumer and Assyria. Then I realized the greatness of my country which ruled the world before all the empires. This people should be proud of its history and glory, which was destroyed by the enemies and finally a greeting to all the Assyrians on earth. We are proud of you as we are proud of our civilization all the love and appreciation and respect to you ❤️🌹

*All empires fall, eventually. But why? It’s not for lack of power. In fact, it seems to be the opposite. Their power lulls them into comfort. They become undisciplined. Those who had to earn power are replaced by those who have known nothing else, who have no comprehension of the need to rise above base desires.*
