I just completed this repair and wanted to post a few points in case it helps the next people that have a go
- this video by DIGI Service is the best i could find - clearest and easiest to follow. So thanks to the poster. However it does miss at least two critical steps - the desoldering/re-soldering of the solder bridge and draining the capacitor. My capacitor was charged with 110V despite not having a battery in it for several days - potentially lethal!
- the screws are NOT philips head - i wouldn’t use a PH 2.0 or similar again - they are JST screws and will/do VERY easily strip out with a philips - highly suggest you order a JST, as would have made both deconstruction of camera and re-construction soooo much easier
- there’s no guarantee that you haven’t missed/errored in a step until it’s all done and you turn it on for the first time…..very anxious moment….and if you’ve damaged a few screws (see JST comment above!) from putting it back together then there’s no going back in again
- labelling the screws as you take them out - i recorded everything with a gopro above my workstation and labelled the screws in order of removal and used a bamboo skewer to point to the hole it had just came out of - made putting it back together much easier
- take a million photos during the process, the wires wrap around each other in weird ways and you’ll be glad you captured something u don’t even realise at the time
- i lubricated the small gear and other gears with high grade grease as indicated on another forum which seems a good idea and is in the service manual
- get the service manual - easily found online - it pulls the camera down to individual components in excess of what you need, but it does help to see the screws labelled (each is given a name e.g. “618” i think based on length/diameter/type)
- when i put the motor back into place i made sure the aperture bar was up and the mirror down - there is a wheel that the gears interface with and this is a resting position - it’ll make sense when you see it and examine how it works - i’m not sure if you have to do put it back together this way (i lazily skipped referring to the service manual for this step…not smart in retrospect, but got away with it)
- use lead free solder as indicated in the solder manual - can’t mix leaded and lead-free AFAIK - and it’s a PAIN to work with. The solder bridge is the hardest soldering part. Unsolder/solder about 8 other wires which were straight forward if you’d done soldering before. You cannot do this repair without some degree of solder work.
- you will need tweezers, plastic tools to handle the electronics and open flaps. Bamboo skewer was really useful.
- I didn’t do the spring repair method - opted instead for buying a new black mini-gear thing.
- take your time. This video was 40 mins in duration from start-finish but the guy/girl here is an electronics jedi/ninja. It took me a few days of nightly work, especially because i over documented the screw removal and order of things, but that paid for itself in the ease of just playing the videos in reverse
- the repair is worth having a go if you’ve got nothing to lose. When you take the first photo and know it has worked you feel awesome!
Good luck to anyone who attempts this epic repair! (well, epic for me anyway)

Soooo basically . . . . Throw the camera away.
Aint no way I could ever remember where all those parts go and in what order. 😔
Great video tho - thank you for posting it 👍👍

*update - since I decided to give it a go - a couple things id like to point out
1 - the flash capacitor must be drained of electricity - it can be dangerous and damaging. (In my own case, I just pulled the battery and a couple days later the capacitor drained completely by itself. )
2 - you do not need to remove the base plate for the tripod mount.
3 - there are several wires that need to be de-soldered (not shown here)
4 - I made paper sketches of every step and pressed the screws I removed into the paper where they go - they are different sizes and types.
5 - clearly, this is a flaw in engineering - how bout a rebate nikon? Discount coupon? Anything??

Very detailed video. Nicely recorded. Warning message about discharging flash capacitor will be good.

I had this problem with my D80 and Nikon were charging +300$ (CAD) for repair. I chose to buy a newer model instead. Now that I have nothing to lose, I might try to do it myself. But that's a lot of screws...

Amazing video. I just got a D90 w/ 2021 exposures and it locked up. Got a refund from the seller. Nikon should repair these for free since so many and D80's have failed...

Hi, thanks for the good video. My D90 just give me this ''ERR'' message today. I have a question, with the spring, how long can I expect my camera to work properly? This is will be the same if the camera was new? Thank you!

Just save some money and buy a new one, not worth taking it completely apart, what a nightmare !

How did you know which part was broken? Screen shows only err, without any indication what might be a source of the problem

Hi my sister gave me her old d90, it was my first time taking a photo with dlar, i was adjusting the focus and when i took the photo its completely black, and now it displays error message

i own 3 cameras, they all broke at the same time; service wanted 500$ for the repair. I took the cameras apart & fixed everything for 50$ - it's easy but takes a lot of time. BTW, using gloves dat can carry electric charge is not the best idea.
