Inline 6 is known to get hotter than usual so I not only replaced my entire cooling system on my 2000 WJ but I also cut vents in the hood so it can breathe, that's why you see lots of jeeps with vents it's not just to look good 😆. I did all that for less than 300 bucks

Take the thermostat out, leave it out and put the housing back on. That will tell ya if that was the problem. My old cherokee went 2 years without one.
Also, you can boil the thermostat in a pot of water, stay near the pot and listen for it to pop. If it pops its good.

If you want to know if your head gasket is blown, just change the oil.

Most times, you'll find coolant.
Otherwise, check your exhaust for odd smelling smoke.

If that fails, you have a blockage, your water pump is probably bad, or you have a cracked block.
Fun times.

Filling this is the key. Use a lift pump. Mine suffered the same thing, and would overheat after replacing the thermostat and water pump. Unlike some GM units that had a bleeder valve in the system, MaMopar didn’t think that far ahead. A lift pump is the only way to fill the cooling system properly, as it pulls a vacuum on the system. Which in and of itself is useful as you can check if it’ll hold vacuum over 10-15 minutes. If it does, no leaks. If it fails, ya got a leak somewhere.

With any old jeep you need to replace the entire cooling system every few years because everything Mopar builds is junk
