I remember I had a few arkansas stones that my grandpa used to sharpen his woodworking chisels on, I've been racking my brain trying to remember where they Anyway nice tutorial, reminded me I need to go digging for some sharpening tools in the basement!

Just purchased my first water stones from the Perth Wood Show. As all the instructions on the box are in Japanese, this video was an absolute god send. What I want to know now is what to do with the stone once I have finished sharpening for the day.

Nice video, I've just purchased some King stones after 20 years of using an oil stone! would've been nice to see that chisel put to work at the end.

Cool, I just bought an new, old stock King Deluxe 1200 which has a little chip (what grit do I used to fix that, it's on the edge?). I like the sticker on it, if it won't affect performance, I'll dip that in water with the sticker still on- it'll be my first time using a whetstone to sharpen my scirros coz' I can't cut the online shopping packages that well, anymore.

God bless whetstone that are Made in Japan. :-)

Sorry to be critical but any sharpening video which doesn't mention checking for the burr on the initial lowest grade of sharpening is just not good enough. Without checking for a burr you're going to either undershoot and end up with a blunt edge or spend way to much time overshooting and removing too much material unnecessarily. Also, not showing how to strop at the end to get final polish and ensure any micro-burr is removed is a massive omission.

To anyone who comes across this video and doesn't already know how to sharpen, do yourself a favour and go find any of the much better instructions on youtube . Look for Paul Sellers, David Charlsworth, Rob Cosman, or many others. they each have subtly different approaches but are equally expert and comprehensive.

What about stropping and removing the burr?

Good video but the porn music on a continuous loop made us turn it off way before the end.
