South Korea’s Hyundai Motor now accounts for 10 percent of electric cars sold in major European countries becoming the fourth biggest player in the industry in the region.
Lee Eun-jin has the details.

In 2022, electric cars made by the Hyundai Motor Group were the fourth most purchased EVs in the top 10 main electric car sales market countries in the European Union.
This is based on data for combined sales for Battery Electric Vehicle, or B-E-V, sales in Norway, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Ireland, and Finland.
Those countries make up 64 percent of the B-E-V market in all of the EU.
Hyundai Motor and Kia combined sold 96-thousand-988 electric vehicles in 2022, taking up 10 percent of the market the fourth largest after Volkswagen at 25-point-6 percent, Stellantis at 14-point-1 percent, and Tesla at 13-point-4 percent.
Geely and SAIC Motor, the two leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers reached 8th and 9th place respectively in this specific European market sales category, while BYD Auto in competition with Tesla for the number one global market share only took zero-point-4 percent.

Sluggish growth was also seen for Japanese electric car manufacturers. Toyota only sold 7-thousand-554 electric cars in the top 10 electric-vehicle-purchasing European countries, Mazda 3-thousand-921, and Honda 1-thousand-274.
By car model, the top three purchased B-E-Vs in this EU market were the Tesla Model Y with 78-thousand-and-17 sales, followed by 67-thousand-and-49 units of the Volkswagen I-D-4, and the Tesla Model 3 with 49-thousand-645 sales.
While for Korean-manufactured B-E-Vs, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia Kona Electric were the 8th and 9th most sold vehicles, the Kia Niro ranked 14th and the Kia E-V-6 was 19th.

Industry analysts say that Korean manufactured Battery Electric Vehicles are doing well in a region where brand loyalty runs deep for leading domestic Volkswagen-manufactured EVs.
