Always check to see if the alternator belt is broken, missing or loose before you pay a lot of money to replace your alternator. Sometimes the belt has just gotten stretched out, is worn or is broken. It would be a real bummer to replace the alternator when all you needed was a new belt. Always start with the cheapest, easiest things to fix first. Sometimes you get lucky.

Also check the alternator fuse, which is typically in the fuse/relay box under the hood in vehicles that have an alternator fuse. My Sonata has an alternator that needs replacement. The first indication was the battery light coming on in the instrument panel - intermittently at first, coming on and going off randomly. Then, it came on and stayed on. I drove to the store, and when I came out and tried to start the car, it wouldn't start, as the battery was drained. I got a jump with some booster cables and tried to drive it back home. I made it about half a mile away from my house when the power gave out. The lights got dimmer and dimmer and the wipers started going very slowly, and then, when the juice was gone, the car stalled. So I left the car on the side of the road and walked the rest of the way home with my 6-year-old daughter.

Pay attention to the warning lights in your instrument panel, instead of being chronically optimistic and ignorant about vehicular mechanics. If your battery light comes on, then you should probably get an electrical/charging system eval at a shop.

You gave the most important information....my van stalled while it was in idle. As soon as it stalled, the battery light came on and I could not start it. It was trying to crank, but there was not enough juice in the battery to start it up. I knew it was the alternator....now I have to get it replaced.

Thank you . This video explained a lot . I had my Car in the shop for another issue about 3 weeks ago. They had to do diagnostics to find the problem . My question would be : If I had diagnostics done 3 weeks ago, and I also had an alternator or battery going bad on me, wouldn't it have shown up 3 weeks ago ? Wouldn't it show all things wrong with the Car or only specific things that were specifically being looked for ? Now, I have a Car that won't start. Not sure if its the battery or alternator.

I had my alternator replaced but now my fans for cooling my engine only works if my ac and heater are on at the same time. Why is that? Did the macanic put it on wrong? Because I didn't have a problem with my fans before.
