Do we need to plug it in the modem via ethernet? Can er not do this wirelessly?

I have a dlink router from ISP but since its old I decided to buy a new upgraded version on the new routers in the market R6260. I connected and setup the router but it was done while the dlink was still connected with Ethernet cable. I use 2 routers now. Internet connected to my Dlink(DIR-600M) router and then Dlink router connected to Netgear Router via LAN port on Dlink to Ethernet/Internet port on Netgear router using ethernet cable. I was to remove the middleman, and user internet directly from Netgear R6260. How can i do that? Whenever i plug the internet cable in Netgear router the "globe" icon does not switches on evern after half hour. How to setup the router directly with internet?

Stay away from Netgear if you have Comcast/Xfinity! Days wasted on the phone! three different Netgear WiFi gateways, including orbi, will not stay connected and EX7000 extender doesn't work with Comcast gateway.
