Sonic Frontiers Review

Sonic Frontiers reviewed by Travis Northup on PlayStation 5, also available on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Sonic Frontiers is a delightfully weird and experimental evolution of the Sonic games so many of us grew up with. Its expansive islands are filled with so much variety and pieces of Sonic history, from classic platforming stages to silly minigames, that they’re enjoyable to explore even when awful graphical pop-in is a constant hedgehog spine in your side. Some of the new stuff Frontiers tries out, like the self-contained Cyber Space levels within its open worlds, are fantastic ways to pack as much Sonic goodness as possible into one package, while others – especially combat – are uninteresting experiments gone wrong.

I'm just so happy to hear the game isn't terrible

A modern sonic game getting a 7/10 is unexpected but appreciated

I'm actually so glad Sonic is back to that "usual anime-style nonsense" like you said. The past decade of games felt like Sonic Team was ashamed of the identity they created in the 2000s and instead went for a more childish-humor route. So hearing that the story would be back to that Adventure-era craziness, even if its predictable, has got me hyped!

if ign gave this game a 7 it must be amazing

This game can serve as a proof of concept and actually allow the game series to evolve

Seeing a modern sonic get a 7/10 is a darn miracle!

7 was expected. It's obvious the game could have used a little extra cook time but the Sega executives will never seem to learn this lesson. Apparently the devs had to fight them just to get the extra year they got.

Other game fans: 7/10. IGN doesn't know what they're talking about. How dare they say this game is bad!!

Us Sonic Fans: 7/10 We eating boys!!!

Lost Judgment and Yakuza: Like A Dragon were both SEGA masterpieces and both got a 7 from IGN. I'll gladly accept this score.

Finally, an IGN review who's critique actually sounds like the 7 they give it.

For some reason 7 feels like the right number for Sonic

As someone currently playing it, this is a massive step forward in the right direction.

2:33 "does a great job at building Tails up as more than just Sonic's sidekick."

(Looks back at the past decade and a half of Sonic games)

*THE WRITERS FINALLY DID IT.*

What's funny is that the reviewer seemed to have a blast with the Cyloop while Switchforce was all like dRaWiNg CiRcLeS iSnT fUn.

honestly, it already sounds like a HUGE step up from what we were getting. super excited for when it drops

Hopefully this decade keeps this positive momentum instead of dipping at the halfway point like what tends to happen.

It's one of those cases where the old game set an impossible bar to clear. Sonic adventure on dream cast was a masterpiece ahead of its time!

Sonic Frontiers Score Chart
Open Zone: 9.5/10
Cyberspace: 6/10
Story: 7/10
Boss Fights/Combat:10/10
SONIC FRONTIERS SCORE: 8/10

This is all my opinion

Kinda sad that the guy who did the previews isn't the one who is doing this review but
A 7 is not bad at all
Tho saying that the story is predictable leaves me sour ngl, low-key the thing I'm looking forward to the most

4:06 shoutout to the reviewer for not comparing it to Breath of the Wild 😂
