You know who can still smite as a feature instead of a spell?

Warlock.

I do think it's the sloppiest way to limit it, I'd much rather it have been
"Once a turn you may apply your smite and expend a spell slot", to prevent counter spells and to not busy up the bonus action.

I will say that in my time as a paladin, i wasn't laying smite down so often this really throws a wrench in my plans, but if i want to go nova, it does hinder it, it seems they wanted to minimize nova openers between this and gloomstalkerlosing their nova features.

While it is a nerf, there's a lot paladins get that still makes them good.

how do you make a dual wielding paladin if you're using your bonus action to smite tho :(

I rather they limit it to once per turn, so that the paladin really has to choose between smiting the big bad or using it as a reaction in order to save the sorceror.

I'll be interested to see how many people actually play paladin after this. Then again, maybe less paladins was the intention.

We tried out the new paladin rules last night...and i dont like them. Seems like too big of a nerf. Im going to play that with 2014 rules.

Funny enough, there's a lot of new features of new Paladin that I love. Bonus action heal, free summon steed cast and more channel at the coast of a once nova class.

They could have just limited smiting to once per turn. The idea that someone could Counterspell your Divine Smite is just... not good.

I have a question. If I cast one of the smites, like thunderous smite and keep it till my next turn so I have my bonus action back, then attack can I Devine smite with the thunderous smite

So who's taking the 3 lvl dip in roque for an extra bonus action

I like a lot of the changes to the paladin (except for the horse) but generally i think im gonna use the 2014 version of smite, maybe limiting it to once per turn but thats it. I understand the idea of these changes making paladins want to use other spells, but it just makes it too limiting. There’s now almost always something better you can do .
Also, hot take, a class using their core feature often is not a flaw

This change doesn't bother me because I'm currently playing a paladin who only smites big monsters since you don't get spells back. Need those slots to burn in order to smite. No slots no smite. I'd rather cast some of the spells over smiting anyway.

smiting on every attack ? Even better use divine smite in addition to a smite spell. Sadly gone.

Yea but now it's less accessible for Barbarians to multiclass into Paladin

Lets be real. The Paladin got absolutely fucked in this abomination of a change. Having it be easier to multiclass with a warlock is not a selling point: it means that it is just purely worse because now you need to multiclass to make it better.

This is just taking what was special to a class and making it less special and building barries around existing rules to keep it somewhat special. It's like building a car with a moped engine and putting two horses to pull it because the 50cc two-stroke mess cannot move the tires.

Horrible game design.

I saw a build with dualwielding, that used hunters mark to amp dmg. But i font want to play a ranger i want to bring divine justice to evildoers 😢

I like the change of using your bonus action to activate but making it a spell I dont care for. I have a Paladin/Barbarian that I DM for and rage smite is just cool.

Divine smite as a class feature was the only thing that made paladins worth playing. Fighters hit just as hard and clerics are better in every regard except in melee, now either one can take magic initiate paladin to give them the only advantage paladins had. Regardless now that divine smite is a spell it can be counterspelled…what’s the point especially since it’s a concentration spell, we already have those and they suck.

making it a bonus action is so much worse than just limiting it to one smite per turn. It is probably a heavier nerf than most people realize, because it severely impacts the action economy of paladins.
Unintuitively, this change might even backfire completely and lead to paladins becoming more one-dimensional, because you feel like you need to get your smite in each round now. These changes seem poorly thought-out to me.
