Understand autism. This is how preschool and primary school felt for a person on the autism spectrum.

Understanding autism is a huge part of how we can create a better and more caring world for autistic individuals and a huge part of that is understanding autism for children.

Understanding autism for parents is also a big one so that the parents can help with the ease of transition and understanding of preschool and schooling for children on the autism spectrum.

Discussing the topics of how a child with autism experiences school and understanding autism from their perspective it’s going to be how we create an autism friendly environment in schools.

I hope you enjoy this video and take away some interesting points that can help change a child with autism life.

If a child is diagnosed early in life then there should be early intervention schools / classes for pre-schoolers. These should be in my opinion exclusive for autistic children. In regards to what school is suitable after depends on the child. Individual assessments need to be continuously made throughout school life. We decided to pull our 13yr old out from a mainstream school although he is highfunctioning, he struggles to keep up with the work and to organize himself. Switching teachers for each subject is also proving stressful. He had an assistant but in the area where we live they are not educated to work with autistic children so they are of no help. Many parents have to get lawyers to help with their child’s needs. It’s crazy hard but we’re not giving up.

Where I live, Michigan (USA, ) preschool is generally ages 3 or 4 and it is not universal, meaning parents can spend money on preschool or look for a school district that provides it for free. Kindergarten is when students are age 5.
Kindergarten is part of primary school; which is called elementary school in most US states. We have elementary school, junior high school or middle school, and then high school. .
This video is very helpful. As an elementary STEM specialist, I see all classes once per week. I can see the anxiety on students' faces when entering and leaving the room. Transitions can be so difficult. I will use many of these strategies in the future. Thank you.

Hey Dan, this video has helped massively. My son age 4 has recently been diagnosed with Asperger's. He has been really struggling with certain things at school, mainly a lot of what you explained in this video, for instance he hates playing out when it's raining, yet the teaching staff force him and wonder why he has a meltdown. He hates the library, I didn't understand why when the teacher told me because he loves visiting our local one, its obviously the rushing and noises etc. This video has really given me a great insight into how my child is feeling at school and it's going to allow me to put some things into action in the early stages of education so that my son can thrive at school instead of being the awkward stubborn one. With help and guidance i hope the teachers can put these ideas in place and hopefully minimise my son's anxiety and meltdowns. I'm truly grateful for this insight into primary age.

Like you, I often felt out of step. Sometimes it seems I spent entire days daydreaming (don't know where my mind was) because I missed so much. And others felt alien to me when they knew what to do when I had no clue.

My teachers let me stay in the library during break times after a while, which was very helpful ☺ They also set up a "chat group" for me and a couple of other girls who were on the spectrum, and anyone else we wanted to invite, to help us with social skills.

My autistic son is in kindergarten... His teacher just called me saying, they've decided he should be held back and repeat it next year. He's tall for his age, but they say it would be better for him, even having an IEP for him, he still must repeat kindergarten.... Also his older sister is 13, has Asperger's, she's in 6th grade.... Has difficulty relating to others, sits alone at Will they be content with their future?... On a form, her teacher asked me, what I would like her to be when she grows up?...I "HAPPY"! THAT'S ALL I WANT FOR THEM.

I struggled with all these things myself as a child. Another thing I struggled with was navigating the schools. I didn’t understand the layout and would get anxious and overwhelmed trying to navigate it daily. At recess I would just stay on the swings because it’s predictable and non interactive. I would get so anxious in the mornings that it would make me feel sick and then I couldn’t eat. School was frustrating because everyone else already just seemed to know what they were doing and I didn’t. I was in the counselors office every day for dysregulation until I was taken out and “homeschooled” (sort of)

Pre-school in the US is before kindergarten or may include it. Kindergarten is generally age 5. Elementary school takes kids from grade one (age 6) through grade 5 or 6 depending on region. Middle school is usually grades 6 through 8. And high school is 9 through 12. (So UK Primary and US pre school are not the same thing.)

This is why if your child has a diagnosis and it still struggling with daily skills you need to seek out an advocate. Any Autism Speaks kind of organization can point you to local advocates who will come to your schools meetings and help you fights for accommodations and modifications your child will benefit from.

My daughter was recently diagnosed with autism. Shes only 2 1/2 and I'm so nervous about her starting school. She struggles so much with crowded rooms and loud noises.

This is insane! My 3 year old has Autism, he is in preschool in special education. He is having the hardest time to get out the car. Totally lost on how to get him to go, he has a great time once he gets in his classroom. Just the transition from car to classroom 😔

In the US preschool is before elementary. The first year of elementary is kindergarten and every year after goes by numbers.
