Servant Leadership: LEADERSHIP AS A SERVICE

Servant leadership means that leadership is exercised as a SERVICE to the organization, because the leader has a permanent concern for the needs of the teams. He/she feels responsible to create the conditions that will allow employees to be successful in any given situation. That is a big shift from the traditional top down perspective where leadership is seen as a prerogative to set direction and to hold other accountable for their achievements. Such decisive decision making is part of a service oriented leadership and should be exercised when required to provide clear direction. But leaders should also be inspirational, create great working conditions and be able to coach team members when needed. This is a much broader understanding of leadership and can be seen as the black belt we should strive for during our lifelong leadership learning journey.

Thank you for spending your time in preparing this presentation. I will definitely consider the needs of the organisation more in future. I also think that servant-leadership was taught in the New Testament by the Saviour to his apostles. In my own words: If you are a leader (the greatest) you have to serve those you lead. You lead by example. To be great you have to be down to earth (humble) and be willing to be lead. Great leaders are in effect great followers. This is why it's not a good idea to think that to make the greatest difference in life we can only do it while we are at the top. The key is to do your very best in whatever capacity you find yourself in. In my experience I also learnt that to be a good leader does not necessary mean you are the strongest, or most intelligent or even experience because leadership thrives on more than this. The qualities I have mentioned above are very helpful but they may not help one to deliver. I know of men and women who were considered the best, the strongest and most intelligent but failed to deliver in a leadership position because they lacked people skills, emotional intelligence, ability to read the situation or even what their followers are going through. A leader with a clear strategy, a compelling vision, strong communication skills, a hint of intelligence, inspiration, ability to lead by example and humble is likely to get the job done. Always remember to say goodbye when your mission or time is up.

I believe the needs of an organization is for each team member to have an acceptable level of understanding of their job requirements & expectations, so that organizational goals are not severely compromised.

This is a good democratic view of Leadership. In today's millenial staff environments, it is need of the hour. Well done !!!

This is the approach i have taken my entire military carrier. which is not the norm. This approach has allowed me to be very successful but more important allowed my troops to be even more successful. This was proven time and time again through awards, promotions, recognized sustain performance by squadron leadership and selections for special duties. I also find it very rewarding due to the close relationships developed and the tangible results I see in my people when the grow and become better versions of themselves. Essentially their successes are my successes just as their failures are also my failures.
