The show was really careful to portray him as a sociopath not a psychopath. His childhood and all the experiments made him a victim, so his way of being powerful or in his own words, a god, is to hurt people he thinks are weaker. He never stood up as a kid. So to him, thats the weekness.

Very impressed with the show, he's a monster, in the same way people can be. Jist with lazers.

That's not why.
Homelander had no friends growing up, and any he tried to make later were terrified of him. So he missed out on the experience of just having people around who were comfortable around him. That's necessary for peer bonding and proper psychological development. Therefore, the people who don't fear him fulfill a deep psychological need from his childhood, even if those people detest him.

Edit: for people whining in the comments that what I said is the same as the video, it is not. Having respect for someone is not the same as needing them psychologically.
