It's not just that the hint of desperation can be off-putting to good people for a relationship, but it also draws in people who will take advantage of that desperation. You will overlook red flags because they are actively trying to fool you into a relationship in a way. Sometimes those people know what they're doing and are just predatory, and sometimes they are also hurting people looking for love that just haven't healed enough to know when they are hurting the relationship. So ultimately, for both ways it ends up with a toxic relationship, or at the very least one that you have to work much much harder to maintain. Being comfortable with yourself draws people in who are also already confident in themselves, and that makes it easier to work through the problems that just come with any relationship.
