Every upright bass sound nearly alike ( in terms of tone ) even when played acoustically regardless of if it's laminated or carved.
What affects tonal differences are:
1. Type of string ( spiro, pirastro, gut etc.all have their characters)
2. Action
3. Room/Ambience
4. The most important is method of amplification and recording..
Don't waste your money on perception ( carved/solid has a better tone than ply
. That's true but it's very very insignificant and unnoticeable).

So I'm an electric bassist and I'm looking to pick up an upright bass to get a better jazz tone (hard to get a good acoustic bass tone with an electric lol) thanks for this! Hopefully I can get my hands on one soon!

Solid wood? As in carved out of solid wood? Like, a fully carved from wood doubled bass? I think you're right in that there are 3 possibilities here but not what you've listed. Your third cowboy here would be - hybrid! A combination of laminates comprising the back and sides but with a carved top.

Just bought an Etude Bassics 2 student outfit for less than $800. I was afraid I was getting a pile of firewood with strings and a tailpiece. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I am an electric bass player who has made the switch (three weeks ago actually) since retirement. It is well made, functions well, looks and sounds good, and retains tuning rather well. Obviously it's not a German made (China I think...saw a Chinese made Rolex once for $150. I swear you couldn't tell the difference) old master's, well worn symphonic low-end stalwart, or one that Ron Carter or Paul Chambers would have chosen, but it more than serves the purpose for learning, and some introductory quartet gigging. I'll reassess progress in a few months or so, stash away a few grand, and then see what's out there to make a long-term investment in. Thanks for the vid!👑🎸🎵

Very nice advices! I've a doubt... is the whole body built in carved (or in solid) wood? Or just the front? I want to buy an upright bass this week, and searching information in internet I found that the front (the tap) of some chinese double bass have solid wood but in the back they have laminated wood.

Thats a real tough choice, do i want a bass that is resilient or one that will sound much better but also more fragile...

I'm a trumpet player, but I'm wondering why the Bass on the left looks a bit more weird than the one on the right.

If you're not playing solo bass pieces, does it really matter what it sounds like? Your tone will likely be drowned out by other instruments.

if you are in a group where the tone doesnt matter very much… _quit the group_ .

If you are in a group and your tone doesn't matter, then please stop.

When is tone not important? Really? That was the dumbest statement of the year.
