When I first started my channel, I was skeptical of how difficult it was to continuously push out content Every. Single. Week. I had sleepless nights, the money I spent on filming equipment seemed like a waste, and I overall had no motivation to grow this channel... but I kept focused. Not only did I listen to the feedback, I learnt from my mistakes, focused on a niche and, most importantly, stayed consistent. Now... my channel is thriving more than I ever expected. If I can do it, you can too!

I used to have a Samsung Galaxy S7 which I recorded a lot of videos with. Some of those videos got hundreds of thousands and even millions of views.

As someone who is just starting to try to get my channel up and running, I appreciate that you understand the reality of being on a budget. Being able to use my iPhone as my camera will definitely allow me to spend money on the other components that I need for better lighting and sound. Thank you.

I've been using my iPhone X and a £30 Movo Cam as my MAIN YouTube camera for 2 years (now iPhone 12 Mini) with LumaFusion and Filmic Pro app. It's easy and awesome.

I spent around $100 so far, for lights and a microphone. But I might buy a ring light as well as a phone holder next 🙌🏻

The quality of the videos is important eventually, but personality is a key for success (for those who do get infront of the camera), for those that are camera shy (meee) quality video is probabably the most important.

after watching and reading a bunch of stuff on this topic, i concluded that this is the absolute cheapest way to do things:

- buy a bright lamp and something to dispense it (white umbrella, light sheet..) and put it next to your camera (with books or boxes)
- use an external mic, it doesnt have to be very high quality. it just has to be close to your face. you could even use another phone to record your audio by hanging it above your head just outside the frame, or hiding it by ducktaping it under the table if you're sitting in front of one.
- stabilize your camera (with books or boxes) and film in 4k if possible (it boosts the algorithm).
- put some lights on the back for a better ambience (read: put 3 flashlights or your friends'/ family's phones.)

thats really it. this will give you enough of a "professional appearance" to start. all the rest can be done later on when slowly the first money starts to roll in.

For me the key investment is TIME. Yes 100% I need better lighting and a better mic. I already had a tripod (about 30 years old) but a box or shelf or whatever can work. Lighting will be next and a wireless mic after that. I don’t predict a camera any time soon. My spend so far has been on hosting the website to go with the channel and buying Lumafusion as the app I do all my editing on. Lumafusion is awesome but again there’s a time investment in learning it.

Great video! One thing I would like to see from your crew is a suggested set up for those of us who film in a workshop, garage or outdoors.

Just a tip from my experience. If you use your iPhone for videos buy a spare 3.5mm to lightning adapter. They are easy to lose or misplace and it’s always good to have a backup

Nice video :) I've found that if I place a lamp with an LED bulb (so it doesn't get too hot) with some thin paper over the top (to diffuse the light) I can get pretty good lighting for my vids so don't worry if you're new like me, and not at the stage where you can buy specialist lighting!!
