Volvo XC90 Hood won't Open

Hood Pops, but can't get the rest of the way Open. There's simple trick to get past this. You don't need to be a mechanic.

You'll need something long and skinny with a flat end (at least 12-14 inches). A Screw Driver, a skinny wooden dowel, and aluminum broom handle might even work.

This video was a blessing for us today! After we tried to open the hood of this Volvo in -15 degrees Celsius (5°F) this video help Soo much. We got the lid open using long garden scissors, filled the washer fluid, and was back inside in the warmth. Thank you Soo much from Canada 🇨🇦!

There is 10mm bolt on the vertical support next to the radiator. I pulled it out and greased it up and put it back on. Works great now. Wouldn't have been able to find the problem if it weren't for your video. Thanks!

Fantastic video!! Thank you so much, saved me a tremendous amount of time trying to figure out why the hood wouldn't open after so many trouble-free years 🙂

This has just happened to me (owned the car 2 years, and it’s never happened before). Lifesaver thank you.
I’ve just used some penetrating oil on the pivots and worked it back-and-forth a few times it seems to have freed it off. I’ll dismantle it and grease it properly at the weekend.

Thank you man, had exactly the same problem. Your video gave me a good idea how it works.
Then I cleaned the parts where they rotate with WD40. After I sprayed in silicone oil and on top Silicone fat.
Moving the parts by hand a couple of times and now it works. The screwdriver solution is not for every day use, especially at night.
Happy New Year from Russia )))

Thank you for your video! I was able to open the hood with little issue after my trusted service tech forgot to put back the hood release latch after our last service. Many laughs to be had, but glad we were able to get it open!

Thank you! Sharing with you the other steps I added as I too had to mess with bonnet mechanism to pop the hood and would get angry. I lubed the mechanism arm, hook & clasp. Open and closed a few times after application and massaged in lube on clasp & hook. For now I don't need to push in clasp. Thank you!

Perfect!!! Was in Canada with wet snow falling and windshield washer empty……bought a gallon and couldn’t get the hood open. Looked this up at a stoplight and it worked fast. Got to the chalet and found some lube, all works great now! Couldn’t even check the oil and I wasn’t aware as this is vacation house car that gets little use. Saved me a trip to the garage!

Thank you for this neat tip. My XC90 has been parked for over a year and the sticky bonnet has happened to my car. This tip is invaluable!!!

Thank you very much. It did take some work to pry off the little tailgate handle panel. Both before and during my initial taps to punch through the rusty pin, I was spraying everything with WD-40. I suddenly realized that the latch and its spring mechanism were functioning again, returning to the lock position on its own. I decided to leave well enough alone since I will be removing the exterior handle again in the near future to mount a rear view camera into it. I reinstalled everything and sprayed the pin with white grease.

Thank you! In my case tonight I only had a breaker bar to hand, of which the handle conveniently fits through the gap and pops the catch :) looks a bit extreme though haha!
