Welcome to the place where I share dementia tips, strategies, and information for family members caring for a loved one with any type of dementia (such as Alzheimer's disease, Lewy Body dementia, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, etc.)

In today’s video, I talk about neuroplasticity. This is the brain's ability to adapt and grow. After about the age of 50, the brain loses volume in the hippocampal area. That's the area most impacted in Alzheimer's disease. My doing routine and consistent exercise, the brain can actually increase in volume rather than decline. If you've ever needed a strong reason to start walking, THIS IS IT! I also talk about how through routine exercise, people with dementia can keep their function longer. What are you waiting for? Find a walking partner, and keep each other accountable.

In case you haven’t met me, my name is Natali Edmonds and I am a board certified geropsychologist. That means that I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with older adults. One day, while hiking a trail, I came up with the idea for Careblazers and I decided to see if posting videos online could provide help to the many other Careblazers in the world who don’t get to have help come directly to them in their homes. I hope that this work helps you in some way on your caregiving journey.

My husband with FT dementia walked incessantly during the last 5 years (normally walked 10 kms a day)of his life. His dementia lasted 19 years. I’m assuming his walking helped him live much longer with periods of normality in between. 🌹

I’ve just lost 11 kg from stopping drinking 23 years of coke. My point is though I’ve started exercising. I find it hard to walk far because of arthritis and varicose veins. can I still get this effect in normal gym excise ?
