I've heard it said, "Don't push your furniture against the walls!" Our space is small, and thus this is necessary for foot traffic as well as all the needs of the various family members. I do appreciate how in this video, many solutions to poor advice were as simple as consider rearranging your furniture.

I've met a ton of people over the years who seem to live by the phrase "color is bad". Also encountered a number of anti-color interior design channels on YouTube. But colors make me happy and their opinions don't matter, so I've decided to encorporate as much color as possible into my home.

As a builder I have learned good design is actually a bit complicated so your “why behind the what” explanations are so helpful. Love what you are doing. Thank you.

I don’t comment much on YT but I feel compelled to do it today. I follow other interior designers and they all have something to offer; yet you are one of the few that offers real substance. You’re one of the few (perhaps the only one) who takes the design subject to another level. Thank you for that.
On the subject of hotel decor: I read a lot of tips about using them as inspiration for decor. Even though it is a good one I couldn’t understand why that suggestion wasn’t working for me. Until I realized that I like to STAY in a hotel; and I want to LIVE in my home. I want my house to feel like home, not a hotel 😁 so my quest continues.

I really appreciate your emphasis on everyone finding their unique voice in their interior design story. I have always marched to the beat of my own drum, but even I felt confused/had some self-doubt when I watched videos by influencers on YouTube that aren't designers...they approach things in a more black & white way. They label certain design styles (that I love) as boring- this doesn't make sense. It depends HOW you interpret or curate! The advice I hear that confounds me includes: 1) choosing paint colors based on trends 2) Grouping many items together when styling...all the time 3) buying items for your home specifically for staging, rather than buying items that are both beautiful and meaningful over time...

This is the only interior design channel I've watched on YouTube so far that doesn't make me feel like a big gormless idiot for not doing everything in a certain way, or for having my own thoughts about what I like and how I want to live in my space, or else constantly second guessing my choices. So I don't know if I've been a victim of bad advice so much as bad teachers. Thanks for being a good one.

I never got the "I want to live in a hotel" fantasy. There may be some hotels that would do that, but they are REALLY expensive.
What really influenced me was the atmosphere of coffee houses, especially the soft, cozy light that always fascinated me... I learned from there that there should be several small light sources in the room if I wanted to be cozy.

From one "cleaning enthusiast" to also thinking about how much trouble it will be to keep a room, a piece of furniture, or decor clean when making design decisions. It isn't the only concern, but it ranks pretty high....😁

I LOVE your emphasis on exactly who has to clean all these lovely rooms! Also, I am actually in the process of replacing the old contractor-grade doors in my house. When faced with the hollow or solid question, I had good hard think about it…solid is more expensive, but damn it to hell, when I slam a door, I want to hear a BANG rather than a whisper. It’s all about impact, honey😜

This video by itself (and your channel at large, of course) is a perfect example of why we need more people with formal design education giving advice and fewer design enthusiasts. Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy design videos from all sorts of different creators! But I also recognize where their blind spots are and what the limits of that advice is. Design is such a personal thing that it doesn’t really matter what the current trend is, it matters what and how you are reflected in your space. At the end of the day, you have to love it for you, not anybody else. Great piece as usual, Garrett!

I love how you appreciate that design advice has to make sense for the specific space the individual is living in. Your knowledge, experience and insight really come through in your presentations. Also I am glad you don’t do what so many “you tube” designers do, which is to constantly worship Restoration. Hardware, West Elm, Crate and Barrel … etc, as if those stores were the only places to get “designer approved “ items. No imagination or creativity there, ; and I find that their homes, or what you can see of them, tend to look like furniture stores, rather than personalized and inspiring spaces. You clearly appreciate both meaning and beauty in a hone. Love that!

Had a friend who thought she was a great designer, she had the most bland and boring home I'd ever seen. She tried to "help" everyone with her great advice. Got so no one wanted to invite her over.

Interesting thoughts about lighting. I knew lighting design was a discipline unto itself.

But I realized as I thought back to my Grandmother's home, built during the Depression, the kitchen, dining and full bathroom had overhead lighting. Bedrooms, the powder room and the living room did not. They only had lamps and wall sconces.

Now I'm considering if that's why (besides Grandmama herself 😁) her home so often feel cozy.

I like a lot of interior design channels but let's be real you're the only one giving free lessons. I appreciate you.

I agree with all your points and want to add that changing the scale of upholstery pieces in a living room also allows guests to sit more comfortably. Good work.

Solid advice. I feel that you get to know the people using the space to design it, and that you DON’T try to impose some interior design that’s “all the rage” on anyone. I enjoy your channel so much! Thank you! Pet the furry kids for me! 🌹

I've been having rug stress in my living room so this was so good for me! The concept of loving your bedroom because it looks like a hotel? I've never totally understood that either. And thank you for having your own style and letting us have ours. I love that you give good, solid, professional advice that's actually helpful and not encouragement to shop your store. 🙄

I work in real estate (new) and to properly advise the client I do not hesitate to discuss decor, choice of furniture and modifications with them and I LOVE that. In general, customers are afraid of color, limit their choice of finish to very boring choices, especially they don't know what to do with the use of room space, and I spend most of my time discussing all these points with them to make them see the potential of the space they want to buy. The main problem for customers is that they have a hard time downsizing and I have to convince them to sort and get rid of some furniture, not easy! I try to reassure them and bring them ideas, suggestions so that they can tame the space and see it as their space with potential. I even have a workbook to illustrate my suggestions and help them understand. I will refer them to your site. Your videos are very useful and the subjects very well chosen and also well supported by logical and professional arguments. I have very similar tastes to yours! Merci!

Awesome advice, as always. Yes, yes, yes on the whole white room thing! I see this advice everywhere and IMHO it's just plain wrong.

I have a small bedroom/study (in fact all my rooms are small!) with a small-ish window, which I initially painted white thinking it would feel larger and arier. It made no difference. I've since decided to lean into the dark feel and repainted it a rich earthy black/brown shade. If anything, it now feels bigger and it's a cosy, luxurious-feeling space, rather than a stark cell.

That being said, I also recently refinished the old IKEA bookshelves and cabinet in my (also small) living room from black/brown to white and pale wood. This *does* make the room feel larger but I think that's more to do with the furniture now being much closer in colour to the off-white walls than before so they don't feel as though they're intruding on the room so much. In my experience at least, it's the colour/tone contrast between large furniture items and the walls that affects how big a small room feels much more than the specific colours themselves.

Come through Professor! 😄
I’ve gotten so much confidence in my own design sense by watching your videos. I had an overbearing civil engineer friend try to impose his style on me and I smiled sweetly, channeled your epic sass and said, “I love that for YOU, Honey…” 😏 He was speechless. What could he say? 😄

But seriously, everything is not for everyone, and I love people who empower us to be ourselves. Opinions are not facts and you bring the FACTS, Darlin’!
