This is a perfect example of why privatisation doesn’t work. This and many other industries have effectively been monopolised and we have zero choice. If it’s in public hands and people don’t like it then the government pay with their jobs. So the outrage to a situation or to a lack of investment would directly impact the government of the time and therefore it would be in their interest to get to the bottom of the problem.

The problems with water companies started much earlier than this. In 1976, when rivers dried up, farmers were still extracting water with extraction licences that were issued twenty years earlier. Then complacency entered the deal, where water isn't treated properly, done on the cheap, so massive profits can be extracted and diverted to dividends and not investment. Most of our water systems were built by the Victorians and badly maintained ever since. The profits should be put back into water improvements, not by raising customers prices.
