The Allied troops formally ended their occupation of West Germany on 5 May and the country joined NATO the following day. It was decided that in the emerging climate of the Cold War, West Germany was needed as a defence against the Soviet threat. As a result, Germany began rearming later that year with the Bundeswehr formed in November. It's name was intended to distinguish it from the Wehrmacht of the Second World War yet there were still concerns about lingering Nazi sympathies in the army and the impact rearming Western Germany would have on the west. Here Brian Connell reports from West Germany in 1956 where he interviews members of the army and documents ongoing training of the Bundeswehr.

I'm so happy to live in Germany. We rebuilt our country by ourself and now live free from war and enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world.

This video is so old that you can see BDR / West Germany was still using US-made "Duster" self propelled AA gun & Patton MBT, Super Bazooka antitank rocket, license-made Belgium FN FAL (G1), and even mock up tanks to save for economy. But then in 1960s.. BDR made their own stuffs such as Leopard 1, G3 battle rifle, Panzerfaust 44 "Lanze" & Panzerfaust 3 antitank launcher, Schutzenpanzer Kurz, Marder, Gepard, Spahpanzer Luchs, Bo-105 helicopter, etc. While on the other side of the border, the DDR / East Germany was not capable of producing their own stuffs other than Trabant & Wartburg cars, most of their army was using Soviet-made equipment up until the reunification of Germany in 1990.
