In my tests these Z-Wave locks resulted in increased overall security due to smart features like Auto-Relock, and lock state detection.

I would love to get a 2021 update to this on most current gen locks

Thanks for the video, nicely done. I have a Schlage Z-Wave lock on my home; in fact, it was the first Z-Wave device I purchased and one of the first aspects of my home automation system using Home Assistant. I think having a lock like this is really a game changer for your family - never worry about being locked out of your home! And being able to tell who (which code) unlocked the door is also very helpful. Knowing when the door is unlocked (from the inside) kicks off an automation that turns on my porch lights - I haven't had to do that manually in months now. A door lock like this is one of the best home automation investments I've made!

Great video. One important feature of the Kiwkset lock is the Smart Key re key technology; re key the lock yourself in seconds in 3 easy steps. This way you can replace the lock and still have the same key as the old lock. Providing you were using a Kwikset lock before.

I appreciated this video very much! I hope there will be a followup in a year or two (as technology advances). My suggestion for additional thoughts would be to include some locks with physical buttons (as opposed to a touch-sensitive interface -- sometimes in winter, having to remove gloves to enter a code is difficult), and a comparison of features such as battery life and wireless range.

Also, many people who use their garage door keypad for an alternate/guest house access, and those have known vulnerabilities. It might be a useful counterpoint to those against "keyless entry". Let alone wireless garage door opener exploits.

Great review. I do use the August lock and have integrated it with HA. The only problem has been with the polling frequency but HA has fixed that.

Just bought Danalock v3 BT&Z-Wave + Danapad works like a charm, very safe. Gonna buy a Danalock v3 ZigBee for another door in the house.
Works with Android app, Homekit, Home Assistant and whats not.
Fairly cheap and quicker opening than Yale etc. But still Danish quality and scandinavian design.
No problems with locking what so ever, auto adjusting, has all sorts of timings, individual settings.
No simple AA batteries and therefor LONG battery life.
No cloud needed. Its loud, but that's a good thing here.

Rob, I know you don't like things that aren't easily locally controlled, but you really need to consider the Yale Lock with a Connected by August module. You get DoorSense with this option and it's surprisingly accurate and can tell if the door is ajar or fully closed. This makes auto locking much more reliable. It supports Apple Homekit, Google, Home, and Amazon Alexa. You can integrate it into Home Assistant by pulling the device from a HomeKit hub, or by using the August Connect Bridge and your August account log in details. If you do Airbnb, August can auto generate and disable codes for guests.

I prefer the versions with no physical key. There are two nubs on the bottom edge to power the lock with a 9V battery should you be lockout out with a dead battery, but the yale locks do a very good job at nagging you and they continue to function even at very low battery voltages.

My August Lock Pro connects to my HA via Z-Wave, I could use the August integration but that then would use cloud polling. Also it meets all three of your conditions including having a door sensor to tell wether the door is open or closed, it reuses the outside key lock so it stays stealth from outside as well as having an optional keypad.

Edit: forgot to also mention that it works with Homekit via BLE, unfortunately this way can’t integrate with HA which is why I use Z-Wave

Wwould love to see smart locks that use NFC from your smart device. Well done, and thanks for the in depth look.

Have you tested the Kwikset Kevo? Instead of the large numeric pad on your front door, it uses your your cell phones Bluetooth as a FOB and locks and unlocks upon a simple touch. I'm curious about how it rates, as it offers a more traditional look to your front door.

Fantastic timing.. I'm in the market and had my eye on that Wyze lock for the door leading to my garage. I'm excited to see the community sort out local integration.

@The Hook Up - Something else about the Kwikset and why I personally chose them... the ease of rekeying. I purchased 3 of these devices for my home and will choose them again later because it can be rekeyed by the owner (if they aren't all keyed alike from the factory). I don' thave to wonder which key fits which door, I know I only have one key for all of the doors if needed. Yes, the motor is a little loud, but if you're across the house, you know it's activated. I also like the flashing indicator on the inside, if turned on, the LED will flash green when unlocked and yellow when it's locked (every 6 seconds). Yes, it will decrease battery life over time but a visual status indicator in a dark room is a nice feature.

Totally agree with you on lockpicking, or other mechanical entry method, being a much bigger threat. I've got Medeco high security deadbolt on my home, and my reason to stay away from smart locks isn't the wireless compromise concerns, it's that they are all fairly low quality *locks*. Far too easy to pick/drill.

Please do an update and cover August and Schlage as well as covering smart entry door kits vs deadbolts. As for the basic lock itself, Schlage is just a better lock than kwickset and they have both wifi and zWave options. August allows you to use your existing deadbolt, so you can use almost any deadbolt, including some level 1 deadbolts, much better than Schlage or kiwickset. Lastly, it would be awesome to cover some integrated locks, what lock the entry knob and the deadbolt at the same time, and automatically. Integrated is the best security when paired with a steel or reinforced door, steel or reinforced frame and a quality lock. Kicking in the door is still the most common way to get into most houses because people do not have a quality door or jam and/or do not replace the puny 1” screws in everything and the light weight strike plates. Someone will have to break the glass or their foot to get into my house, both of which will make a lot of noise and set off the lights and alarms, not to mention the cameras and “secondary security, aka pew pew devices”

I'd like to see your review of the Schlage Sense.

I recently added MyQ to my garage door opener and have started using it with Amazon Key in garage delivery. I'm curious about the security of MyQ and I'm considering adding a Yale Smart Lock to automatically lock the entry door during deliveries. Also, we've been using a Schlage keyless lock on our front door for years to allow access to our cleaner and guests and as a backup in case a power failure would disable our garage door opener. It's worked great and we've never had any issues, but I'd like to look at stepping up our security and functionality by replacing it with a smart lock. How does the Schlage smart lock compare? The MyQ has really piqued my interest in adding additional smart home functionality.

I've had a Kwikset 916 for 4 years and it's been working great (with HA and ISY). My only two complaints are: changing the batteries is not simple and the external screen has accumulated two small cracks from the evening sun. Also, the keypad beeps when the sun comes out of the hard shadow of the entryway and suddenly shines on the keypad. It's not a problem, but occasionally freaks out the dogs.

I would love to get a 2022 update on this!

Still struggling to find a secure, simple installation lock which can be integrated into a smart home, i.e. Home Assistant.

Wyze lock now supported via Home Assistant! Yay! BTW, as someone who used to do a lot of computer security work, technical complexity and skill do not make a hack, any exploit that makes a system function outside its parameters becomes more dangerous the easier and faster it is to implement.
