The Holy Koolaid Origin Story

Welcome to Holy Koolaid where we explore big ideas through a lens of scientific skepticism and break them down in a laser-focused easy to understand way. This video is my origin story.

I'm Thomas Westbrook, and this is the story of how I fell in love with science and went from being a missionary kid in a former Soviet, Muslim country to being a full-time science communicator and secular activist. This is the backstory of Holy Koolaid where we question everything because free thought and curiosity help us inoculate ourselves against abusive control tactics and bad ideas. I've avoided the trap of religion all my life. Haven't been so lucky with abusive relationships, even though the tactics of manipulation are identical. I suspect hormones were the difference.

Hello Thomas...I am a Christian, born again through Jesus Christ. I really enjoyed your videos..the humor, satire and promotion for critical scientific thinking. Obviously I do not agree with most of what you say, but I admire how you stand up for your belief because I have the EXACT questions you have...questions that the God I worship chose not to answer. Obviously I have faith in the unseen and un explainable..and you ask questions that test those faith, which I think is needed in church to help us grow in our faith. As I watch your videos, I am so, so, so sorry for how the church you were in have treated you...with their overzealous crazy prophecy, frauds and theology that are not Biblical. I guess all groups will have their nut cases. I'm sorry for those crazy evangelicals and the church teachers who told you to stop asking critical questions..., stuff that many of us Christians would not do. Thank you for pointing out things that Christians should not be: Crazies and Sheeps. I love your sincere devotion to logic and science. No rebuttals or questions here. We all know where that ends. Just admiration from a distance. Thank you for telling us also about your struggles and progress as the year passes by. Keep up the work to make critical thinkers exercise their minds as we all search for the answers to each of our destinies.

I had a similar season of questioning that lasted for years. However, thankfully I started at the beginning again and audited a seminary that had all its classes online. It took years of research and studying everything especially philosophy and science.

I read everything from the past greatest thinkers to modern experts. I can honestly say it’s the best thing I ever did for myself. In that I have found faith in God that is a reasonable faith not a blind faith and not built on modern biases and money driven agendas. Not built on rock star pastors or superstitious preaching.

I will add I also have a degree in Arts and Sciences which added particular knowledge in a few areas to build on. Faith is personal and experiential. The human consciousness can go places that scientists cannot. So scientifically you will never fully be able to understand faith, however, it is just as real an experience as driving a car. There are spiritual principles when practiced that have the same effect on multiples of people That is observable and duplicatable. I would say that is a step towards scientific knowledge. So where agnostic and atheist dismiss God so easily because they focus on others actions or ignorance, I have had a different perspective about faith through much academic study and personal experience combined.

I’m a questioner too and have generally not found that my curiosity has been discouraged in regards to the bible or my faith. However, I’m in Australia and can see how that alone would create a different experience to someone raised in far more conservative/oppressive nations such as in Eastern Europe, or even America. As a Christian it's important to question my own beliefs and to explore the Bible deeper. And I ended up an even more devot Christian but good luck being an Atheist. We need people to question everyone and dare to be curious.
