The worst part is seeing the teachers comment “i rewatched it and it wasn’t even that bad” and wonder why all the kids act out and don’t respect them. Respect is not free.

As a short person, I feel this on such a personal level. I am treated differently and I have to work harder to earn respect as an adult in my 30’s. I am the same age as most of my coworkers. My female manager who is just 4 years older than often calls me “kiddo” and the other day she called me “little Maddie” in a cutesy voice and told me how everything I do is cute and how cute it is when I’m working hard. This was absolutely her way of patronizing me and trying to make me feel “less than”. I’ve worked under her for a while and that’s just the type of person she is. I could go on and on, but the point is, short women definitely have to work harder to be taken seriously and to earn respect in the workplace.

Favorite incident: my first full time teaching job out of undergrad was at a school known for their basketball program. I was on lunch duty and went over to the team table to get them to clean up. A student who hadn’t met me yet started mouthing off, so I reached my hand out in greeting and said “Hi - I’m the new band teacher. Nice to meet you!” as the other teacher (also the priest at this Catholic school) was heading over to us. The student turned bright red, apologized and cleaned up his mess as my counterpart stood watch and laughed. Always a good chuckle - and I miss that school and that community.
