Meet Rachel, a Material Science Engineer at the Team! 💪

From analysing materials in the lab, to investigating issues that come back from the track under the microscope… her focus is always on how we exploit different materials to their limit 🔬👀

A wise man once said - "A Big thanks to all the guys and girls at the factory who are working so hard behind the scenes "

Thank you so much for creating this video. Our 11 year olds daughter is a huge F1 fan and the Mercedes team is her absolute favorite. She wants to be an engineer when she grows up and we enjoyed watching this video with her so she can learn about the type of work you do. Inspiring!

As I am a colleaque of you Rachel, it wouldn't be summarized better than you did. Honestly, the key of the success in any kind of engineering application mostly depends on Materials Science i.e. the manipulation of materials so your job is highly crucial for the team, even if all the other departments and the engineers inside the factory are important as Sir Lewis said before :) Thank you for your great effort and nice to meet you and of course the other special thanks goes to the all of the members of this great team. GO FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!

Terrific to see a young person with a great education at the cutting edge of a technology that will benefit much more than F1 in time. So much more to our sport than racing. Well done Rachel and Mercedes.

The strength of materials is one of the most difficult fields of study!
Best luck with your job!

I was at GE Aircraft Engines, working as materials engineer/scientist (PhD) and got lucky: I was on a team helping Ferrari F1, mainly on materials subjects. My area was gamma titanium aluminide, which was later banned except for exhaust valves (for cost). We metallurgists would speak ill of composites — "rags and glue" — but our department developed the beautiful composite fan blades of the GE90 engine. There's a metric for how much you could spend to save a pound in a jet engine, around $200/lb at the time, but it seemed that F1 teams could spend 10X or 100X more, and it was really just to redistribute the minimum weight favorably. The best part was that we acquired some *very good* tickets that Ferrari had sent to GE Corporate to the first Indy F1 race (2000).

i'm planning on applying for master degree in material science and this video really motivates me to do so, thanks Mercedes.

heeeey as a materials science student this is cool to see. id assume because of the relative high costs of materials science, companies would outsource the materials from companies like pankl etc. its cool to know i actually have a career posibility in a f1 team.

I’m a Honda fan but I will never forget this team is what used to be BAR Honda/Brawn GP. Lots of respect for this organization! Fight on, Mercedes.

One of the few fields in F1 that has a good possibility of translating to serial production vehicles. Hopefully, you get to come up with a *something* (process, material, material combination, etc) that eventually ends up in the public outside of F1.

This series is so great! Normal people just don't understand how much it takes to be a F1 Team and most importantly: THE BEST TEAM!!
