Cool video. One question - shouldn’t you conceptually lead your swing with the hand/wrist though? So elbow forms the trajectory of the swing but you actually lead it with hand/racquet head. Thoughts?

Am wondering if you let the ball bounce higher for a flat shot? When I hit flat, is usually at max ball height and moving into the court.

When hit it flat, it goes to the net but when I brush up, the ball goes up like a lob! My coach told me to hit through and then up, to have both effects. It is not easy at all.

I guess the position of the elbow is the key. When you need to flatten it out, your elbow should point directly at the ball and strike through it.

Steve, I think this is an over simplification. Though I would argue that the flat ball instead of getting the elbow parallel, just get the elbow high. The racket path for the two strokes are dissimilar. The driving top spin shot is more linear while the flat shot is circular. The contact point is slightly further back for the flat shot. There are also many nuances but these are the main differences that I experience. I think the traditional flat shot is not what the pros use today. Today's flat shot is the more aggressive weight transferring shot that Fed showed the tour how to hit. I have studied carefully how Fed hits this shot because I see haven't anyone on Youtube present a detailed explanation. And it always impressed me how he hammers this shot, especially the inside-out forehand. The older style flat shot in comparison was a simple push shot using a continental grip.
