Tying a Super Glue Cased Caddis. Seriously.

Another pattern from C. Boyd Pfeiffer's "Simple Flies," this cased caddis larva is certainly a simple tie. How effective will it be? I have no idea!

Hook: 2x long nymph, #6-12
Thread: Black
Case: Sand and pebbles
Adhesive: Super Glue
Head: Black chenille, ostrich or peacock herl

Hey Matt, I used this fly for a few years back in the late 70’s on the Deerfield river here in Massachusetts. I got the pattern from a FlyTyer magazine. Never caught anything with it but it was fun to make. The great thing about it was it would sink like a stone. 😂😂

Very cool caddis larvae imitation. One word of caution, though. I read about this style of fly in another book of patterns where the author mentioned that in some states it is illegal to use lures/flies made with materials sourced from the streams being fished. Be aware of the regs.

This is a great fly.We have tied and fished it for several years.Linda uses gel super glue, I use uv reison, ending with a coat a coat of thin.I tie mine like a peeping caddis, with tea sand body.Did some with small twigs.that was a failure.Let me say the sand caddis a fish catcher.Have a great weekend Matt and everyone

Nice! I feel compelled to share this. Years ago when I used to keep a few fish for the table I always opened them up to see what they had been feeding on. One winter while ice fishing I caught several nice stocked brookies on shiners. They were all stuffed with these bugs. Next time out I spent quite a bit of time peering into my ice hole. The water was loaded with cased caddis. They were floating just beneath the ice. They actually moved about on their own, slowly. I have since tied many variations mainly as ice flies. I have never really given them a good try casting. But I will. Now. Keep em coming Matt.

Ground down cork added to the sand/gravel can help the fly to be more critically balanced! Just ground down some dry cork in a coffee grinder, I used a wine bottle cork cut into small pieces before grinding it down! This allows the cadis fly to lift and fall more naturally whilst still looking natural!
Another great video thank you.

Tried tying this before, I like how you apply the rocks better. Can’t wait to try it.

The only thing I can think of that is easier is an egg pattern. Nice fly Matt. Keep the good stuff coming.

Yep, I tried it on the Penobscot with local river gravel early in my fly tying. I tried tying it with epoxy over a bare hook, which didn’t hold the gravel well, so I tried putting the epoxy over a thread base. That did work, so I expect using super glue over a thread base would also work. I felt vaguely guilty over tying a fly that way - thought it was cheating the spirit of the tying craft, I guess. When I tried to fish it, an evil tree branch snuck up behind me on an overly high back cast (to avoid the evil bush branches behind me), & the tree stole the fly before I had a chance to fish it. That discouraged me from trying it further. On the plus side, the cased caddis I tied with chopped up feathers did work that same day. :-)

Thanks for sharing Matt. That is a totally different twist on things. Never seen anything like this one. Well not this technique. Cheap to make that’s for sure.
