The 3 Cars We'd Buy If We Had $50k TOTAL

For this Extra Throttle House sofa chat, Thomas and James have posed a fairly difficult challenge for themselves. What is the best 3 car garage you could buy for under $50,000 combined? The rules are, you must pick a daily, a classic, and a sports car listed on AutoTempest, all while staying within the $50,000 budget. Thomas and James take rather different approaches to this challenge, so grab a hot cuppa and get cozy. We hope you enjoy the episode. SUBSCRIBE!

The main point that I've extracted from watching this is that James is basically already living his dream! Congratulations on all of your well deserved successes, lads.

Every time I go back to thinking James is "just" a car nerd, he pulls out this weird (weird is good in this context) mix of comments and I am impressed by how far his knowledge and details of them goes. Please continue to be this approachable. This charisma paired with modern/retro culture is exactly what we need and drags us back to this channel. I would go miles to just have a beer at a pub with him.

My wife & I love your shows. We love the insights and just fun shenanigans you guys get into. We really enjoyed this show and it caused us to really think about this. Here’s what I picked: daily driver, 2018 BMW X5 - $25K, sports car - pick up a ragged out Miata for $5K and dump another $5K in performance upgrades to make a track car that is a lot of fun to drive. Which leaves $15K for my classic, which would be a BMW 2002. That was a lot of fun. Thanks guys. Cheers!

Having owned 2 discovery 3s and a discovery 4 and fitted 5 replacement engines between them, the idea of a reliable landrover is way too funny to me.

James, you basically nailed it. I have an ‘18 Golf GTI, a Jeep Wrangler TJ, and hope to get a Miata next… this can be done in the $50k budget

Wrangler just turned 25 this year, so technically a classic, but have owned it since 2001.

The Boxter is tempting though, I browse them as much as Miata’s

Really great episode guys!

James' Miata is probably quicker than the Boxster of that age 😅

So... I live in the north east, and it's "summer car, winter car, motorcycle" for my garage. Currently the collection is (summer) 98 BMW 540i - paid $5k, (winter) 99 Chevy Suburban - paid $500, put ~5k into getting it in shape, (Motorcycle aka. Sport + classic + convertible) 71 Honda CB100, 72 Honda CB360, 74 Honda XL250, and 85 Yamaha 750 - Paid <$2k for all of them, at least 2k in parts and work on them in the last 5+ years. The bikes all fit in one "car" size spot so it's still a three car garage - all in I would guess I'm at ~$20k, and I love them all dearly. I guess technically they are all "classics" at this point as well. Suburban is great for friends that are moving, or going to Boston with 6 passengers. BMW is great for road trips with up to 4. Both of those are comfortable on the road and horrible on gas. Motorcycles are just wonderful when the weather allows for them, and get 40-90mpg within that fleet.

James guessing the 986 was an absolute delight to watch. Best part of the episode!

For me I think I'd go with actually a similar approach:
Daily - VW Golf GTI Mk6 (~10k €)
Sports - Porsche Boxster 2.7L 987 (~20k €)
Classic - BMW E30 325i (~20k €)

Or I'd get a pristine Audi RS4 B7 and have a daily, a "sports" and a (modern) classic, probably some change left to keep that V8 running for a couple of years too (and yeah i know it's cheating to include it in the classic category as a modern classic, but i was in kindergarten when it came out so it's classic enough)

I had a 1973 240Z that had a tired motor, so I installed a fresh short block for a 260Z with a Cannon intake and triple 40DCOE Webers. Most intoxicating intake sound this side of a Ferrari Daytona. It was light and quick and I got a whopping 15mpg! Great memories!
