Sheriff’s Deputy Rick Grimes and his partner Shane Walsh are pursuing a criminal, when Rick gets and falls into a coma. During his coma the zombie apocalypse takes place. His partner Shane attempts to get him out but the military has infiltrated the hospital and isn’t just killing zombies, or should I say (Rick voice) walkers. They’re also gunning down humans.

Shane pushes a hospital bed in front of Rick’s door to give him a fighting chance and he leaves the hospital. Shane gather’s Rick’s wife Lori and his son Carl, and gets them to safety.

A few weeks later Rick wakes up from his coma and discovers that the world has ended. [clip]

Rick then meets fan-favorite Morgan and his son Dwayne. Morgan explains to Rick everything that has happened and tells him about walkers. [clip, you’ve seen the dead people right?]

Rick and Morgan eventually go their separate ways and Rick makes his way to Atlanta in search of his family.

Once he arrives he meets a group of survivors including characters Glenn, T Dog, Merle, Morales, and Andrea. Merle is giving the group trouble so Rick sets him straight and handcuffs him to the roof of a building. [clip]

The building is surrounded by walkers and Rick helps the group escape and get back to their camp on the outskirts of Atlanta.

When Rick and his new friends arrive back at camp Rick is reunited with his family and his partner Shane. Lori and Shane thought Rick was dead and have been hooking up in the woods. So now with Rick being back things are a little awkward. [clip]

We also meet sweaty heartthrob Daryl Dixon, who’s pissed that his brother was left handcuffed to a roof.

So they go back to Atlanta to get merle, but when they get to the rooftop they find Merle’s severed hand, but he is nowhere to be found.

When they return to the camp they find it overrun with walkers. Rick and the gang show up just in time to help fight them off but there are casualties including Andrea’s sister, Amy.

After regrouping following the walker attack, the group heads for CDC, The Center for Disease Control. But Morales and his family decide to go their own way.

Rick and the group arrive at the CDC where they meet Dr. Genner, the only surviving scientist at the CDC. He explains to the survivors how the zombie virus works. [clip, the you part]

Genner also reveals that he has given up on any hope. The CDC is set to self-destruct and Genner isn’t going to let Rick and the group leave because he insists this is the easier and better way out. Rick convinces Genner to open the doors and they escape just in time before the entire facility explodes.

But before Rick leaves he whispers in Rick's ear a secret we as the audience don’t learn until the season 2 finale, everyone is infected. Even if you die by any natural cause, you’ll resurrect as a walker.

After leaving the CDC we see the group head for a military base called Fort Benning.

Along the way Carol's daughter Sophia gets separated from the group. And while searching for her, Carl is inadvertently shot by a hunter named Otis. [clip]

Otis takes them back to the farm where he lives, where we meet Herchell, a veterinarian who can save Carl’s life–but he needs surgical equipment from town. Shane and Otis go for supplies, get caught up some zombies, so Shane makes the difficult decision to shoot Otis in the leg so he’ll be walker bait–allowing Shane to make it back to the farm with the supplies needed to save Carl’s life.

This is the final straw for Shane’s tilt to the darkside. His lust for Lori and leadership of the group reach a boiling point and he becomes a constant thorn in Rick’s side and he becomes the antagonist of season 2.

Herschel and his family reluctantly allow the group to stay on the farm, as Glenn and Herchell’s daughter, Maggie, fall in love. But then Glenn discovers that Herchell is keeping walkers in the barn. [clip, there's walkers in the barn]

That sound you used for Glen is the first time I've ever laughed out loud watching ScreenCrush. Thank you

For 8 years I have been traumatized and I almost cry every time I see the scene when Negan killed Glen with that bat. You add a cartoon hammer sound effect to the blows and I can't stop laughing now.. You cured me.🤩

I would like to see you cover all the other spin-offs of the show and how they fit into the main walking dead

It makes me so happy to know that theres still people that care about twd out there. Only person I can talk about it with is my brother but he’s not as big of a fan as I am.

I absolutely loved this show but I feel like the large mid-season breaks hurt this show so much.

You covered a lot of detail for like seasons 1-3 but then just glossed over HUGE amounts of stuff for the rest. Including Daryl's exchange w/Patricia in the final episode which for me was the best line of the whole series. I'm paraphrasing here: "You tried to make the world the way it was before. The way it was before was the F***in problem"

This reminded me how brilliant the Governor was as a character.
And how many of the actors were British.

Loved this and everything you do!!! Great recap!
I did hear a couple of incorrect comments. Michonne did not kill Andrea as Andrea wanted to take care of it herself. And Michonne did not get the official kill of the Governor. It was Lilly who got the final kill shot. I remember at the time there was so much hoopla over who was gonna kill him. They basically let multiple people get their piece to try to appease and confuse (😅) the fans.

I just binged all 11 seasons and I was shocked to find out that Rick’s group did in fact NOT serve Negan for months. According to the official TWD timeline - Negan showing up in person and killing beloved characters to getting imprisoned takes place in less than a month. Which is ridiculous but then again Maggie knew Glenn for like 2 weeks on the farm and they were saying they loved each other 🤣 A day in an apocalypse must feel like a month to them.

I stuck with it until ricks story ended. I think its major problem was just the amount of characters it had, it didnt have timd to service them all correctly.

It’s funny that no one mentions that zombies broke in the glass door in season 1 with a rock. Strange that never appeared in the series again until the final season.

It’s amazing how you got all that info 18 minutes. Peak walking dead was amazing I don’t think these spin offs can capture that same magic

I still love how the Saviors "satellite post" is a literal SATELLITE post with a giant radar dish on top
