How A Navy SEAL Gave The Equalizer Its Brutal Fighting Style

The Equalizer adaptation marks the first time director Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington have worked together since 2001's Training Day. Considering that movie ended up garnering Washington his first Best Actor Oscar (he previously earned Best Supporting Actor gold for 1989's Glory) , expectations are high for this reunion.

AskMen's Radheyan Simonpillai sat down with the duo to discuss how they went about creating a unique fighting style for Washington's Robert McCall character - a man with a mysterious past who becomes hellbent on revenge against the Russian mob.

The Equalizer opens on September 26, 2014.

How about some props for Antoine Fuqua, one of the finest directors working today? The man seriously knows how to tell a story in a compelling manner and bring it to the screen. He understands military men and the military mind, too, as "Tears of the Sun" and "Shooter" demonstrated. I became a fan of Antoine's some years back and continue to follow his career - and latest releases and projects - with great interest.

Love these 'trained by navy seals for authenticity' stories, then you look at the scene as a whole and it's straight out of a comic book.

something caught me in the interview that the director said basically, the bad guy thought, denzel the character was kind out of his depth. the problem is the bad guys were the one inside denzel jungle and out of their depth. It's like you think you're going into someone house and taking over, but no, it's his house and you're dead. :p

Maybe Denzel Washington did use Navy SEALs to teach him that stuff for The Equalizer movie but also he is being trained in the martial arts by Dan Inosanto and his students and has been taking lessons from them for a good number of years

Denzel Washington is a true hero. His acting is flawless and his heart is huge! Denzel Washington donated to Fisher House “in a big way” according to the folks at Fisher House.  They won’t disclose the amount of his gift, but Fisher House spokesman James Weiskopf says it’s one of the largest in the organization’s history and that Denzel Washington has agreed to serve on the Fisher House board of trustees.

Just saw this movie for the first time today...so good! Denzel is great at his martial arts! Reminded me a bit of his style in Book of Eli. Now I have to watch the second one too!
