Smaug could have killed everyone whenever he wanted. But he still engaged in conversation. He could have incinerated Bilbo the whole time Bilbo was running at him pleading not to go to lake town. He could have incinerated the dwarf king while standing there waiting to pull the ropes. But even after all that, after being hit with molten lava gold, he still wants them to live to see him attack laketown and kill all the people there. Savage, but civilized all the same.

Just gave to my mind that Tolkien himself said that Sauron and Saruman think Balrogs are deadliest things in Middle Earth right after dragons. So it is ironic that Ori asked Gandalf how many dragons have he killed because he merely survived Balrog, though that was sixty years after the events of Hobbit.
