I saw this as a kid on TV in 1977. Back then there were only three channels, and The Hobbit is what was called a “special”. At the time—especially for kids—The Hobbit was so mysterious and otherworldly. I discovered the book a couple years later, and must have read it a dozen times. Still love it.

Richard Boone as Smaug is one of the highlights of this version when your first introduced to him theres sort of danger to him when he says come thief he sounds like hes amused like he cant decided if he wants to torture or just kill Bilbo straight away the way he shouts burglar hes like possessed its terrifying to me he is Smaug his portrayal of the character is what i consider the definitive take

I wish that the late and great Mr. Richard Boone was still alive and did the voice of Smaug in the live-action version of the Hobbit (yes, I know he's gone but he was Smaug)! Benedict Cumberbatch did a job that Mr. Richard Boone would have been proud!
