How to Get Better Better Gas Mileage (5 Proven Ways)

How to get better gas mileage or fuel economy in your car
(affiliate links)

If you want to get better gas mileage start with your tires. You need to keep them rotated, balanced and properly aligned. Why? Because tires create resistance which can help or hurt gas mileage. Keeping the tires properly inflated will get the best fuel economy.

Next on the list is your air filter. Your engine needs air for the fuel to combust, so make sure your filter is clean, creating the least amount of resistance from the engine requiring air. I recommend an AEM Air Filter because they’re reusable and don’t require oil like K and N’s do.

Make sure to also keep your spark plugs maintained because bad misfiring spark plugs can actually affect your gas mileage by up to 25%.

Now make sure to get rid of any extra stuff in your car to create less weight. Remember that every 100lbs of stuff loses you about 2% in fuel economy on an average sized sedan.

Lastly your fuel grade. Just stick the grade that your manufacturer recommends. You don’t need to go higher in octane and don’t go lower. You’ll get worse gas mileage and your engine will knock if you don’t have sufficient octane in your gas. E85 fuel has about 25% less energy than regular gas, so make sure that it’s at least 25% cheaper if you’re going to use it. And make sure that your car can use E85. Most cars can run on about 10% ethanol, but double check to see if your car can run on E85.

I did forget to mention that keeping your oil changed on schedule helps with better mpg. When your oil is dirty, your engines moving parts have to work harder than with clean oil. Plus it’s just common sense to properly maintain your car with regular oil changes.

I run the tires at 33 - 35 psi at all times of the year and check them on regular basis.

For those who want to know the explanation of why a dirty air filter can affect your gas mileage:
The engine still has to consume energy to pass air into the intake. If your car has no restriction, then no resistance is created. If they suck a lot of air, but not enough is given by the size of the opening, then the engine will technically use same energy for less fuel/air mixture, thus getting less efficient. Some people may not experience worst gas mileage depending on your driving habit. If you're the type of person that is flooring their car, then the engine will try take has much air has possible, thus getting restricted by the amount of air that can pass through the filter/hole size. The more air it needs, the less restriction you want.

Nice video mate watching from australia. Your videos are really nice and to the point keep up the good work. Just wanna add couple more points to all the relevant points you have mentioned already. I think gas mileage is also dependent on the way you drive a lot. If driver A always does small distance inner suburb driving and driver B does a lot of freeway driving, driver B gas mileage and engine condition will be much much better. Lot of people brake very hard and then accelerate rapidly especially at lights. If you approaching red lights and you let the car de accelerate naturally, just legs off the gas pedal, and then brake gently. Same goes with accelerating on green as well gentle not like a race car. Thanks a lot

Love your vodes. Supporting the channel, I ordered the tire pressure gauge and I really, really wanted to order the filters for both my cars. Neither my Jeep or Prius was a fit, darn!

I put some water in my tires. On long road trips this adds inertia to the wheels and I get over 900 km per 50 litres. Now is the fun. How will you get water inside the tires?

Also remove & thural clean your throttle body to get the gunk out & it increases gas mileage by alot

Mileage is miles/gallon so more miles you cover in lesser fuel the better, so always drive at 55mph, regardless of school zone and soon you'll be driven around for free

Do not use a reusable air filter, at least not from a cheap brand. Those filters don't filter well against fine particles, sometimes even worse than cheap economy filters. Unless your goal is performance oriented, or you drive a normal car like a camry or corolla, don't use a reusable filter. It's not worth it in the long run.

A modern engine will run on any grade of gasoline. In a high compression engine, you will lose horsepower, but if you are interested in gas mileage, it's unlikely that you are after the last bit of horsepower possible.

AEM filters are made by K&N if you didn’t know

I have a feeling that the pause after saying "you need to get the junk out of your trunk" is because you kind of wanted to laugh. I could be wrong but it did make me laugh a little. Good tips and I didn't know it was so easy to change an air filter!

All good but you forgot that e-85 makes more hp since its 105 octane or higher 110 for true 80%

Isn't E85 15% ethanol and 85%
Unleaded ?

All true but gas.
I use regular unleaded gasoline and get same and better gas mileage than using higher grade gas and hv no lifter noise. Such a false statement.
Also mith busters proved it wrong to.
Most cars today won't burn higher octane fuel and it ends up going out yr exhaust pipe polluting the air and money down the drain!!!!
