For story 1, the other people at the table realized what was up immediately. Dan got a wake up call. Good apple.

Story 1: I feel like the friends who also canceled their food and got drinks instantly knew what OP was up to. They're good enough friends they all knew what he was doing and why.

I have never split the bill evenly... We always just pay for our own order... Is they not something you can do in the US?

Story 1 good apple..He did say he didn't want to go if those two people were there.

Separate checks help keep friends friends. Mooches are mooches and others in the group feel the same.

For story #2, the report is because the ex was violating the courth order for him to have the child, not because he wanted a couple extra hours

Story 4: They... try to give piggy back rides to the kids whenever they can? That... that seems strange to me... I've never been to a camp where they do that... every camp I've been to, the kids have more energy than the counselors.

OP’s house in story 3 sounds so cute! That’s the literal dream 😍

Good apples all around.
Story 1: Everyone should be paying for what they order period. It’s the best way to stop resentment between friends/family. IF YOU CANT AFFORD TO GO OUT, THEN STAY HOME!
Story 2: If your ex is withholding your child from you and breaking a court order, you 100% have a right to call the police on them.
Story 3: The neighbor is an asshole plain and simple. They don’t live in an HOA and even if they did, no one should ever have a right to say what you can do with your own home that YOU pay for.
Story 4: The councilor has a medical condition and if they can’t carry a camper(which they shouldn’t anyway for safety reasons) they shouldn’t do it regardless of the other’s feelings.

As the kid who goes from house to house if my parent doesn’t give me and my sister to the other parent ( if it’s their day)they 100% can call the police. It would basically be considered kidnapping.Especially taking us somewhere that the court didn’t approve. But since this kid is so little and the mum is claiming he is sick I’m don’t know how that works.Because if me or my sister is sick we just text the other parent saying I’m sick can I stay where I am.

Story #1: Good Apple! OP told Dan that if Greg and Susan were going, he didn’t want to go and I assign told them why. And if Dan chooses to split a check with people who ordered 4X the cost of his dinner, that’s on him. Dan could have told the waiter separate checks and only paid for his meal.

I bet Greg and Susan stop ordering extravagant meals or the 3 who only ordered drinks will go out together. It’s a win either way.

Story four: I feel for OP. I’m petite and I’d struggle with a bigger kid too. I would also feel guilty. This OP is only 14, it’s a lot to expect that she’d know she would need to treat them all equally. I’d say the adults leading the camp are at fault for not preparing the counsellors adequately.

Story 2 good apple. Court ordered visits are a legal right.

Oh great another HOA story. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I will NEVER understand why anyone would want to live in a community where people who pay NO BILLS in YOUR HOUSE can tell you what you can and can’t do on your property

I feel like the skirt on the young child was completely ignored in story four, and it matters.

I think Dan and everyone else there especially the two that canceled their orders realize that they want to be fancy and get the most expensive things on the menu and then have everyone else pay for it so that forces everyone else to have less so that they can have what they want at someone else's pocket.

4. She said there are 4 counselors for 10 kids. Is the kid bigger than all the counselors? You can't explain to the other counselors your situation so they can carry her? My real question is why are these kids so tired. If you are older with a bad foot and back can still walk then they definitely can.

Story 1:
I feel crab apple is fair but the situation reflects a deeper issue at play. The fact that the other friends also canceled their food suggests they shared similar feelings of OP and lacked the courage to say something and / or lacked the confidence to express their concerns. Conversations about money can be incredibly challenging and often feel awkward. Consider how workplaces discourage discussions about salaries; financial matters are typically kept private unless you're in a marriage, and even then, some couples choose to maintain separate finances. This societal norm has made money a taboo topic. Personally, I would struggle with bringing it up because I tend to avoid confrontations. While I might not have handled it the same way as the OP, I can empathize with their approach. I would likely have chosen to skip the dinner altogether to sidestep the issue. However, given that some friends opted for drinks instead and the reactions of others, it seems some of the other friends felt similarly to OP as they canceled the food as well. It looks like perhaps the ones who ordered food were using the situation to minimize their share of an expensive meal or they wouldn't have acted like that.
