Burned guy served in military alongside heir to Earldom (2nd cousin to older man). When heir died in battle, burned guy took his belongings and is pretending to be heir. Was good at coaxing details from Edith (earls daughter) to improve his claim. Show is Downton Abbey.

Patrick (supposedly the man in bandages), was next in line to wed Mary, was said to die on the Titanic, now turns up critically burned in the war. The real Patrick was a family member and knew the family well, but Lord Grantham does not believe that this soldier is indeed the real Patrick. At the end of the clip, he he did something with his hand by his lips, which was a family quirk, and was recognized by Lord Grantham, which could prove his identity. But during the war, lots of men got to know one another, especially in the hospital where they shared stories about themselves, and opportunistic soldiers could assume another's life story and identity, especially when so badly disfigured.

This reminds me of a story which actually happened in France in medieval times and was recorded in law court documents. A man came to a village at the end of a war, having left behind a wife and extensive property 7 years earlier. The wife accepted him as the genuine article, but not all the villagers were convinced, and he was eventually brought to trial. It turned out the original villager had died in the war, but not before the pretender had memorised his life story. It's a gripping French movie mystery with the excellent Gerard Depardieu as the con artist. "The Return of Martin Guerre" 1982, well worth watching

Sommersby is the name of a 1993 film of Civil War soldier (Richard Gere) returning home from having been a prisoner of war & assuming the identity (or not?) of a member of a village.

The Majestic- Jim Carrey, with amnesia, is mistaken for a missing/deceased soldier returning home from WWII.

With the imposter portraying Patrick, in Downton, he was severely burned & had to rely on mannerisms.

This was so odd. He was brought into the story and then right out…never found out the truth about him. We all assumed he was lying but there was never any follow up with it. They should’ve just left this whole thing out, added nothing.

Oh, come, the real Patrick was well known to the family, him and the girls grew up together, there's no way they couldn't recognise his voice and his eyes. This is not him, obviously.

Of all the plots in this story, this one adds little or nothing to the total effect. It was just too thin. But Julian Fellows is still a genius!!

People do not lose the accent they had up to age 25 in just a handful of years whether they lose their memory or not. This small storyline, was it 2 episodes, seemed gratuitous at the time as it was never followed through to any conclusion.

Did we ever truly get an answer as to whether or not this guy was Patrick?! They kind of left it open ended in that bothered me. Lol Because if he really was Patrick that's an extremely jacked up situation! Although, if he wasn't, then it's good that he went away.
