UK holidaymakers could face new rules in the Canary Islands following "over-tourism" protests in popular destinations such as Lanzarote and Tenerife.

Thousands of locals took to the streets on Saturday, expressing their frustration at the influx of British tourists. An anti-tourist sentiment has been growing across the Canary Islands, with residents declaring "enough is enough".

Having been to these Islands I can say that without Tourism they would be dirt poor. They are desolate volcanic islands with not a lot going for them other than they get a lot of sun being off the coast of Africa. Plenty of other places like dollars and UK sterling and are also sunny

This applies to all nationalities of tourists not just the Brits!

Self imposed problem, don’t blame tourists take it up to those who allow the growth of hotels, private renting etc etc. No one wants to go on holiday somewhere they are not wanted. I could understand a crackdown on poor behaviours, I’m embarrassed to be British sometimes.

I think they need to do something. I have visited each island over the years and the cheap bars don’t help as it’s just easy to get drunk. There are tourists who don’t behave due to booze. I have nothing against the LGBTQ community but some dress so outrageously and actually that goes for the skimpily clad leaving the beaches. There needs to be some decorum to dress appropriately and behave appropriately. I can see why the locals are fed up to be honest. They are beautiful islands and should be treated with respect. Easy to say that there are alternative destinations but the Canaries take a lot of beating. The trade winds and position give year round sunshine and no mosquitos so they are comfortable. Personally they should be world heritage sites and treated with respect as a tourist destination of nature and uniqueness

Meanwhile Koh samui has no problems with over tourism. Safe to say I much prefer that over the canary islands.

Oh, you can still go if you give them money. Sounds a lot like ULEZ.

I’m sure giving them more money will help.

A classic case of 'Dont bite the hand that feeds you'. Nothing special about those islands. Just go to Dubai where they truly appreciate tourism,
